Whether you are kayaking, snorkelling, or simply relaxing on the beach, El Nido offers a uniquely varied island experience.

When is the Best Time to Visit?

The best time to visit El Nido is during the dry season (November to May), when the seas are calm and visibility is excellent for island hopping. During my February 2026 trip, the weather was consistently sunny with ideal sea conditions almost every day.

How to Get to El Nido

There are two main ways to reach El Nido:

• Fly direct to El Nido Airport (Lio Airport)
  • Most convenient option
  • Approximately 10–15 minutes to El Nido town
  • Higher cost compared to other options
• Fly to Puerto Princesa + land transfer
  • More budget-friendly
  • Land transfer travel time: typically 5–6 hours, can extend to 6–8 hours depending on traffic and stops

How to Explore El Nido

The main things to do in El Nido revolve around its well-known standardised island hopping tours — Tour A, B, C, and D.

These tours follow fixed itineraries, and all tour agencies in El Nido offer the same routes and stops. This means that regardless of which agency you choose, the core experience of each tour will be largely the same.

Most visitors will typically complete 2 to 3 island tours, depending on the length of their stay.

In addition to island hopping, there is also a simple land tour option that allows you to explore beaches and attractions on the mainland by tricycle.

• Tour A/B/C/D: PHP 1,000 – 1,400 per person
• Land Tour: ~PHP 1,500 per tricycle (up to 2 persons)

Taishan Travel Guide: About Taishan (泰山)

Mount Taishan (泰山) is one of China’s Five Great Mountains (五岳) and widely considered the most significant. For over 3,000 years, it has been a site of imperial worship, where emperors performed the Fengshan (封禅) ceremonies to legitimise their rule. It symbolizes heaven, authority, and spiritual balance, and is deeply embedded in Chinese culture, religion, and history.

The mountain rises to 1,545m, with its summit known as the Jade Emperor Peak (玉皇顶). It’s famous for sunrise views, sea of clouds (云海), and ancient stone steps—making it both a historical and scenic destination.

Main Routes to the Summit

There are three primary routes up Taishan, each with a different level of difficulty and experience:

1. Hongmen Route (红门登山路线)

• Start: Hongmen (红门)
• Type: Full hiking route
• Details: Classic route with 6,000+ steps via Zhongtian Gate (中天门) and Nantian Gate (南天门)
• Duration: 4–7 hours

My Route: Tianwaicun (天外村) Detailed Guide

This is the route I took—and objectively the most efficient.

Step-by-step

1. Start at Taishan Railway Station (泰安站 / Tai’an Station)
   • ~20 min transport to Tianwaicun (天外村) via public bus or ride-hailing
2. Shuttle Bus (景区大巴)
   • Route: Tianwaicun → Zhongtian Gate (中天门)
   • Duration: ~20 minutes
   • Cost: ~35 RMB (per way)
3. Cable Car (索道)
   • Route: Zhongtian Gate → Nantian Gate (南天门)
   • Duration: ~10 minutes
   • Cost: ~100 RMB (per way)
4. Final Hike
   • Route: Nantian Gate → Jade Emperor Peak (玉皇顶)
   • Duration: ~30 minutes
   • Difficulty: Moderate

Ticketing:

• At Tianwaicun Visitor Centre, only the entrance ticket and uphill bus ticket are available.
• For the downhill bus and cable car rides (both directions), tickets must be purchased separately at the respective bus and cable car stations. No reservations required.

Total Time: ~1.5–2 hours (per way)

Total Cost (return):

• Entrance ticket: 115 RMB
• Bus: 70 RMB (return)

This route allows you to experience Heaven Street (天街) and Nantian Gate (南天门) without a full hike.

This is the most scenic and most popular area in Nalati and the highlight for most visitors. Expect rolling green hills, grazing horses, Kazakh yurts and wide views of the Tianshan Mountains.

River Valley Grassland 河谷草原

This zone sits at a lower elevation and features rivers, forests and wide open plains. The scenery feels calmer and more peaceful compared to Sky Grassland.

Panlong Valley 盘龙谷

Panlong Valley is a more protected mountain valley area with dramatic terrain and quieter scenery. Access here is more controlled and requires shuttle buses.

How to Explore Nalati Xinjiang

Most visitors explore Nalati using the park’s shuttle bus system, as the scenic area is extremely large and each zone has its own shuttle routes.

It is also possible to self-drive in Nalati, especially during less crowded seasons — which is what we did during our visit.

• Of the three areas, self-drive is allowed in Sky Grassland and River Valley Grassland
• Panlong Valley is restricted to private cars and must be visited by shuttle bus
• If you have limited time, we strongly recommend focusing on Sky Grassland, the most impressive and iconic part of Nalati

Most travellers stay in Nalati Town, located right next to the park entrance. The town has plenty of accommodation and food options, making it a convenient base for visiting the grasslands.

Located at an altitude of about 2,070 metres in the Tianshan Mountains, Sayram Lake (赛里木湖) is the highest and largest alpine lake in northern Xinjiang. It is widely considered one of the top natural attractions in the region and a must-visit stop on the Northern Xinjiang road trip route.

Sayram Lake is often called “The Last Teardrop of the Atlantic (大西洋的最后一滴眼泪)” because its water system ultimately originates from moist air masses carried eastward from the Atlantic Ocean by the westerlies. This makes it the easternmost point influenced by Atlantic moisture in this part of Eurasia.

Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, rolling grasslands and grazing horses, the lake’s deep sapphire colour and crisp alpine scenery make it one of the most breathtaking landscapes in Xinjiang.

The best way to experience Sayram Lake is to drive the full scenic loop around the lake. Inside the scenic area there is a dedicated ring road (~90 km) that circles the lake. Visitors enter through the main gate, drive the loop either clockwise or anti-clockwise.

• Non-stop driving time: 2–2.5 hours
• Recommended sightseeing time: 1-2 full days (due to the sheer number of scenic stops)

Start your visit early so you can take your time. The lake is huge and you will want to stop frequently for photos and short walks.

Kanas Xinjiang — China’s Alpine Wonderland & Home of the Tuva People 图瓦人

Located in the far north of Xinjiang near the borders of Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia, Kanas is one of China’s most famous natural destinations and often called “China’s Switzerland.” The region sits within the Altai Mountains and is part of the Xinjiang Kanas National Geopark.

Kanas is especially famous for its turquoise glacial lake, golden autumn forests and misty mornings that look almost unreal. The area is also home to the Tuva people (图瓦人), a small ethnic group with Central Asian roots who live in traditional wooden villages around the lake. Among domestic travellers, Kanas is widely considered one of the top bucket-list destinations in China, particularly during the autumn foliage season.

Understanding the Park Layout & Transport System

Kanas Scenic Area is huge, and understanding the transport system will make your visit much smoother.

Main Entrance at Jiadengyu 贾登峪

The entrance to Xinjiang Kanas National Geopark is located at Jiadengyu (贾登峪), about 30 km from the main visitor centre inside the park.
All visitors must:

• Buy tickets here
• Park their cars here
• Switch to park shuttle buses (all shuttles are free)
• Private vehicles are not allowed inside the park.

Shuttle System Overview

From the entrance, visitors take the shuttle to the main visitor centre, located south of Kanas Lake. This visitor centre acts as the main transport hub — all shuttle routes start and end here.

The Famous Three Bays of Kanas

Fairy Bay 神仙湾

Fairy Bay is famous for its dreamy morning mist. Early morning sunlight filtering through the forest creates a magical scene that feels almost surreal.

Moon Bay 月亮湾

Moon Bay is the most iconic viewpoint in Kanas. The river curves into a perfect crescent shape, surrounded by dense forest. This is the classic postcard shot of Kanas.

Dragon Bay 卧龙湾

Named after its dragon-shaped river bend, Dragon Bay offers a wide panoramic view and is usually the first stop when entering the park.

Fish Viewing Tower 观鱼台

The Fish Viewing Tower is the highest viewpoint in the Kanas Scenic Area, sitting at around 2,030 metres above sea level. From the shuttle drop-off point, visitors must climb 1,068 steps, which takes roughly 30–40 minutes depending on your pace. The effort is absolutely worth it — the summit offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Kanas Lake, the surrounding forests and the Altai Mountains. On a clear day, this is easily one of the most spectacular viewpoints in all of Xinjiang.

Kanas Lake 喀纳斯湖

Kanas Lake is the heart of the scenic area and the reason most travellers come here. The lake’s stunning turquoise colour comes from glacial minerals, and the surrounding forests turn golden in autumn. Walking along the lakeshore allows you to experience the changing colours and scenery from different angles.

White Haba Village 白哈巴村

White Haba Village sits near the border with Kazakhstan. Because of its sensitive border location, visitors need to apply for a border permit to visit. As foreign travellers, we chose not to visit due to the extra administrative process and time required.

Final Thoughts

Kanas was one of the biggest highlights of our Northern Xinjiang road trip. Despite the complex shuttle system, the scenery more than makes up for the logistics. With a little planning, visiting Kanas can be a smooth and unforgettable experience.

Planning an Iceland Road Trip: Overview & Tips

Iceland is one of the easiest countries in the world for a self-drive road trip. The entire island is connected by Route 1, commonly known as the Ring Road, which is approximately 1332km long and circles the country, linking most major towns including Reykjavík. More importantly, many of Iceland’s most famous attractions — waterfalls, glaciers, volcanic areas, and coastal viewpoints — are located directly along or just off this road. By planning your itinerary around the Ring Road, you can efficiently cover the majority of Iceland’s highlights without complex navigation or backtracking.

For those visiting in summer, a self-drive itinerary also allows access to Iceland’s interior highlands via designated F-roads, which are only open for a limited period each year and require a 4×4 vehicle. While the Ring Road itself is fully paved and suitable for standard cars, F-roads are gravel tracks that may involve river crossings and rapidly changing conditions.

Key tips for an Iceland road trip:

• Plan at least 10–14 days for a full round-island drive to avoid rushing.
• Summer (June–August) offers long daylight hours and access to highland roads.
• F-roads are only open seasonally and require a 4×4 vehicle; always check road conditions before driving.
• Some F-roads are challenging even for experienced drivers — research carefully and seek local advice if unsure.
• Accommodation outside Reykjavík is limited and expensive; book well in advance, especially in peak season.

Before heading out, we stocked up on groceries and snacks. With Iceland’s remote landscapes and limited dining options outside towns, advance preparation is important.

1.3: Overnight Stay in Keflavík

After a long flight, we stayed overnight in Keflavík to rest and prepare for the journey inland the next day.

Iceland Itinerary Day 2: The Golden Circle Tour Begins

Day 2 introduced us to Iceland’s geology and history through the classic Golden Circle route. Located close to Reykjavík, this loop offers a high concentration of iconic sites in a short driving distance, making it an ideal start to the trip.

2.1: Þingvellir National Park (Thingvellir National Park)

This UNESCO World Heritage Site lies in a rift valley where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. It is also the site of Iceland’s first parliament, founded over 1000 years ago.

2.2: Geysir Geothermal Area (The Geyser Area)

This geothermal field features boiling mud pools and steaming vents, with Strokkur erupting every 5–10 minutes. Water shoots up to 20m into the air during each eruption.

2.3: Gullfoss Waterfall (Golden Falls)

A powerful two-tiered waterfall that plunges into a deep canyon. Gullfoss is one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls and a highlight of the Golden Circle.

Iceland Itinerary Day 3: F208 Highland Road Adventure + Landmannalaugar

This day was dedicated to driving one of Iceland’s highland routes, offering landscapes very different from the coastal Ring Road. Although weather conditions limited access to Landmannalaugar itself, the journey along F208 was a highlight in its own right.

3.1: F208 Road to Landmannalaugar (Map)

A rugged highland gravel road cutting through lava fields and moss-covered valleys. The scenery here represents Iceland’s volcanic interior at its most raw.

3.2: Sigoldufoss Waterfall (Map)

A lesser-known waterfall surrounded by volcanic rock formations. Its quiet setting makes it a rewarding stop along the route.

3.3: Old River Crossing (Bjallavað)

A historic crossing point on the F208 where we stopped for photos and drone footage.

3.4: Hnausapollur (Bláhylur) Viewpoint (Map)

A volcanic crater lake known for its intense blue color. The contrast between the water and surrounding terrain makes it especially photogenic.

3.5: Frostastaðavatn Scenic Viewpoint (Map)

A viewpoint overlooking a volcanic lake framed by lava fields and rhyolite mountains, showcasing Iceland’s diverse geology.

3.6: Landmannalaugar

Landmannalaugar is one of Iceland’s most famous highland destinations, known for its vividly colored rhyolite mountains, geothermal hot springs, and extensive hiking trails. The area is a major starting point for multi-day hikes such as the Laugavegur Trail and is considered a highlight of Iceland’s volcanic interior.

Due to heavy rain, we skipped the final river crossing leading into Landmannalaugar and had to miss out on exploring this nature wonderland.

Iceland Itinerary Day 4: South Coast Waterfall Chasing – 5 Must-See Falls

Day 4 focused on Iceland’s South Coast, home to some of the country’s most accessible and impressive waterfalls. Despite rain and mist, the conditions added atmosphere to each stop.

4.1: Seljalandsfoss

A 60m high waterfall where visitors can walk behind the cascading water. Expect to get wet from the spray.

4.2: Gljúfrabúi (Gljufrabui) (Map)

A hidden waterfall located inside a narrow gorge near Seljalandsfoss. Reaching it requires a short walk through shallow water.

4.3: Skógafoss

Skógafoss is one of Iceland’s largest and most iconic waterfalls, standing about 60m high and 25m wide. Its immense water flow creates heavy mist, often producing vivid rainbows on sunny days.

4.4: Kvernufoss (Map)

A quieter waterfall accessed via a short walk near the Skógar Museum (short drive from Skógafoss). It offers a similar walk-behind experience without crowds.

4.5: Urriðafoss (Urridafoss) (Map)

A wide, high-volume waterfall located near Route 1. While not tall, it is known for its sheer power. The name means “Trout Falls,” reflecting the river’s historical importance as a fishing area.

Iceland Itinerary Day 5: Volcanic Colors & Coastal Cliffs – Kerið + Dyrhólaey

This shorter day focused on two contrasting landscapes: a colorful volcanic crater and dramatic coastal cliffs. Both stops required minimal hiking but delivered strong visual impact.

5.1: Kerið (Kerid)

A volcanic crater with a vivid blue lake surrounded by red and green slopes. A walking path circles the rim, and a small entrance fee applies.

5.2: Dyrhólaey (Dyrholaey)

A prominent headland on Iceland’s South Coast, offering expansive views of black sand beaches, sea cliffs, and the iconic natural rock arch extending into the Atlantic. The area also features a lighthouse at the highest point, which serves as both a navigation aid and a scenic viewpoint overlooking the coastline. In summer, Dyrhólaey is an important seabird nesting area, including puffins, making it a popular stop for both scenery and wildlife.

Iceland Itinerary Day 6: Ice, Waves & Peace – Sólheimajökull, Reynisfjara & Vík

Day 6 highlighted the contrasts of Iceland’s south coast, moving from glacial landscapes to powerful ocean scenery and ending in a quiet village viewpoint.

6.1: Sólheimajökull (Solheimajokull)

An outlet glacier from the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, featuring crevasses and ash-streaked ice. Guided tours are required for glacier walks.

6.2: Reynisfjara (Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach)

Iceland’s most famous black sand beach, known for its jet-black volcanic sand, hexagonal basalt columns, and dramatic coastal cliffs. Offshore, the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rise from the Atlantic and are tied to Icelandic folklore. The beach is also known for powerful sneaker waves, so visitors must keep a safe distance from the shoreline.

6.3: Vík í Mýrdal Church (Vik i Myrdal Church)

A hilltop church overlooking the village of Vík, offering panoramic views of the coastline and offshore sea stacks.

This day was spent within Vatnajökull National Park, showcasing Iceland’s most famous glacial landscapes and lagoons.

An outlet glacier of the Vatnajökull ice cap, with dramatic ice formations and surrounding mountain scenery. Accessible via a short walk from the parking area.

A quieter glacier lagoon with floating icebergs and fewer visitors compared to Jökulsárlón.

7.3: Diamond Beach

A black sand beach scattered with ice chunks washed ashore from nearby lagoons.

7.4: Jökulsárlón (Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon)

Jökulsárlón is Iceland’s most famous glacier lagoon, formed where the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier (an outlet of Vatnajökull) meets the Atlantic. Gigantic icebergs calve from the glacier and drift across the lagoon before floating out to sea, creating a constantly changing and photogenic landscape. The lagoon has appeared in numerous films, including James Bond movies, and is located adjacent to the striking black sands of Diamond Beach.

9.1: Stuðlagil (Studlagil Canyon) (Map)

Stuðlagil Canyon, located in eastern Iceland, is famous for its striking basalt columns and vivid glacial river. Once hidden beneath high water levels, the canyon was revealed in recent years, becoming one of Iceland’s most visually dramatic natural landscapes.

Top Tip: For the best views of Stuðlagil Canyon, park at the main parking lot (map link) and hike approximately 2.4 km to the canyon. This route takes you to the south-east side, where you can also walk down to the water level for an immersive experience.

A new visitor centre and viewing platform (map link) is being built on the north-west side of the canyon. This access requires no hiking but involves descending a set of stairs. Views from this side are limited, and it’s not possible to reach the water level.

9.2: Víti Crater (Krafla)

A geothermal explosion crater with a milky blue lake, located within the active Krafla volcanic area.

9.3: Goðafoss (Godafoss Waterfall)

Goðafoss is one of the country’s most famous waterfalls. Formed by the Skjálfandafljót River, it is about 12m wide and 12m high. The name means “Waterfall of the Gods”, originating from a 10th-century legend in which pagan idols were thrown into the falls after Iceland’s conversion to Christianity.

Day 10: Snæfellsnes Peninsula Loop – Kirkjufell, Ingjaldshóll, Saxhóll & More

The final day looped around the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often described as “Iceland in miniature” due to its varied landscapes.

Day 4: Milford Sound

Today, embark on one of the most breathtaking drives in New Zealand as you journey from Te Anau to Milford Sound through the heart of Fiordland National Park. The route is dotted with majestic viewpoints and short scenic stops, so be sure to leave early to enjoy them at a relaxed pace.

Once at Milford Sound, the best and easiest way to explore its stunning fjords and towering cliffs is on a 2-hour scenic cruise. Afterward, keep track of the Homer Tunnel’s closing hours before retracing your way back to Te Anau for the night.

4.3: Monkey Creek (Map)

Monkey Creek is a glacial spring located along Milford Road, surrounded by steep alpine peaks. The water here is crystal-clear and safe to drink, fed directly from the surrounding snowmelt. It’s a popular stop for photos, thanks to the dramatic backdrop of sheer mountains and often snow-dusted terrain.

It’s also a well-known spot to see kea, New Zealand’s native alpine parrot. These intelligent and cheeky birds are often seen around parked cars — admire them from a distance, but don’t feed them.

4.4: Homer Tunnel (Map)

Homer Tunnel is a 1.2 km-long, one-lane tunnel carved through solid granite, connecting Milford Sound to the rest of the South Island via the Milford Road. It operates in one direction at a time, so drivers must follow traffic signals and wait their turn. The tunnel has daily closing hours, after which no vehicles are allowed to enter or exit Milford Sound, making time management essential for all visitors.

4.5: Milford Sound (Cruise) (Map)

Milford Sound is a deep fiord surrounded by towering cliffs and peaks, including the iconic Mitre Peak which rises 1,692 meters straight from the water. The best and most accessible way to experience Milford Sound is by joining a 1.5 to 2-hour boat cruise, which takes you past dramatic waterfalls, sheer rock faces, and, with luck, sightings of seals, dolphins, or even penguins. Cruises depart from the main terminal and run throughout the day, offering close-up views of the fiord’s natural features from sea level.

Pop’s View Lookout is a roadside stop along Milford Road offering a high vantage point over the Hollyford Valley. Day 5: Queenstown–Glenorchy Scenic Drive

Depart from Te Anau and head toward Queenstown, widely regarded as the adventure capital of New Zealand. After reaching Queenstown, continue north along the Queenstown–Glenorchy Scenic Drive — a 45 km lakeside road that follows the winding edge of Lake Wakatipu.

This route is considered one of the most scenic drives in the country due to its combination of alpine mountains, glacial valleys, and uninterrupted lake views. The drive is especially popular for its numerous lookout points and its cinematic landscapes, many of which were featured in The Lord of the Rings films.

5.1: Devil’s Staircase Lookout Point (Map)

This lookout sits along the winding section of State Highway 6 known as the Devil’s Staircase. The viewpoint offers elevated views over the southeastern arm of Lake Wakatipu, with the Eyre Mountains visible across the lake. The name comes from the steep, serpentine nature of the highway in this section.

5.2: Queenstown to Glenorchy Scenic Drive

This stretch of road follows the shoreline of Lake Wakatipu and cuts through steep terrain shaped by glacial activity. The road provides continuous visibility of the Humboldt and Richardson mountain ranges, with several lay-bys for photography and observation.

5.3: Isengard Lookout (Map)

A filming location from The Lord of the Rings, this flat river valley with a mountainous backdrop was used for scenes set in Isengard. The area offers wide open views of the Dart River and surrounding peaks, making it a must-stop for Tolkien fans and nature lovers alike.

5.4: Glenorchy Wharf (Map)

The Glenorchy Wharf lies at the head of Lake Wakatipu where the Dart and Rees Rivers enter the lake. The wharf area includes historical infrastructure and clear views of Mount Earnslaw and the Forbes Mountains to the northwest. The lake here is deep and glacially carved.

5.5: Twenty Five Mile Stream (Map)

This quiet, lesser-known stop features a calm stream flowing into Lake Wakatipu with picturesque reflections of the surrounding hills. It’s a peaceful spot to pause, especially if you’re looking for fewer crowds and natural beauty.

5.6: Bennett’s Bluff Viewpoint (Map)

Easily the most dramatic lookout on the route, Bennett’s Bluff offers a sweeping view over Lake Wakatipu and the road snaking along its edge. This elevated spot is ideal for capturing the rugged grandeur of the landscape, especially during golden hour.

Day 6: KJet Jet Boat, The Remarkables & Fergburger

Start the day with a high-speed jet boat experience with KJet, the first commercial jet boat operator in Queenstown, established in 1958. After the ride, take the steep and winding drive up to the Remarkables Ski Area. The access road offers expansive panoramic views of Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown, and the surrounding ranges — not Kingston, which is located farther south. Although the ski area is closed outside of winter, visitors can freely explore the open space and enjoy the alpine landscape. Return to central Queenstown for dinner and try Fergburger, a famous burger joint widely regarded as serving some of the best burgers in New Zealand.

6.1: KJet Jet Boat (Queenstown) (Map)

KJet operates high-speed jet boat rides from the Queenstown Pier, taking passengers across Lake Wakatipu and into the Kawarau and Shotover Rivers. The ride covers nearly 43 km of waterways and offers views of Queenstown’s surrounding mountains including The Remarkables and Cecil Peak. Established in 1958, KJet is the oldest commercial jet boat company in New Zealand and uses twin-engine boats capable of reaching speeds up to 85 km/h, with sharp spins and fast manoeuvres in shallow braided rivers.

6.2: The Remarkables (Map)

The Remarkables mountain range rises dramatically on the southeastern shore of Lake Wakatipu and is one of only a few mountain ranges in the world that runs directly north to south.

The road up to The Remarkables Ski Area reaches an altitude of around 1,600 metres and offers expansive views over Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, and the surrounding peaks. The access road is only partially sealed — the upper section near the ski area becomes a gravel road, which is wide but winding. A toll fee is required per vehicle to use the road, which is open to the public even outside the ski season, allowing access to scenic viewpoints and alpine walking tracks.

6.3: Fergburger (Map)

Fergburger is a legendary burger joint located in central Queenstown, renowned across New Zealand and globally for its massive, gourmet-style burgers made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Established in 2001, it has become a Queenstown institution, often drawing long queues of both tourists and locals throughout the day. Located just a short walk from the Queenstown lakefront and pier, it’s easily accessible and often regarded as a must-try food stop for visitors exploring the region.

Day 7: Shotover River & Crown Range Road

Head towards Wanaka today. Before leaving Queenstown, stop by the Shotover River to admire its deep gorges and catch a glimpse of the iconic Shotover Jet in action. Then take the famously scenic Crown Range Road — known for being New Zealand’s highest main road — as you climb through dramatic alpine landscapes en route to Wanaka.

The Shotover River winds through steep, rugged canyons just outside Queenstown and is a well-known site for adventure tourism. Historically linked to the gold rush, it’s now famous for jet boating and its striking turquoise waters carving through the rocky gorge.

Crown Range Road is the highest sealed main road in New Zealand and connects Queenstown to Wanaka via a winding alpine pass. The road features sharp switchbacks, dramatic drop-offs, and incredible high-country views, especially on a clear day.

7.5: Wanaka Tree (Map)

Located at the edge of Lake Wanaka, the lone willow tree famously growing out of the water is one of New Zealand’s most photographed natural icons. Framed by the Southern Alps, it’s especially popular at sunrise or sunset when the light hits the lake and mountains just right.

Depart from Haast and head north along the West Coast towards Glacier Country. Highlights of the day include short walks to view New Zealand’s iconic glaciers and a tranquil lake known for its perfect mountain reflections. End the day in the town of Hokitika.

This well-maintained track takes you through lush rainforest and along the banks of the Fox River to a viewpoint of Fox Glacier’s terminal face. It’s one of the best ways to see the glacier without a helicopter and takes about 2 hours return on mostly gentle terrain.

Known for its mirror-like reflections of Aoraki / Mt Cook and Mt Tasman on a calm day, the walk to the Jetty Viewpoint is a highlight. The full loop takes around 1.5 hours, but it’s a short 40-minute return walk to reach the iconic photo spot.

9.5: Franz Josef Glacier Walk (30 min return)

This easy gravel track leads to a viewpoint overlooking the terminal face of Franz Josef Glacier. While weather prevented us from doing this walk, it typically takes about 30 minutes return and provides a close-up view of one of New Zealand’s most famous glaciers.

Day 10: Arthur’s Pass

Today marks the transition from the West Coast back to the East Coast via the iconic Arthur’s Pass. This historic alpine route is the highest of the three major passes crossing the Southern Alps and is known for its dramatic terrain, sweeping mountain views, and feats of engineering like the Otira Viaduct. First opened in 1923, it remains one of New Zealand’s most scenic and essential highways, connecting Hokitika and Christchurch.

Day 10 of our South Island campervan trip marked the transition from the rugged West Coast back to the east, with a scenic drive from Hokitika to Christchurch via the renowned Arthur’s Pass.

Arthur’s Pass was chosen as the return route not only for its direct connection to Christchurch, but also for its historical and scenic significance. As the highest and most dramatic of the three main passes across the Southern Alps, Arthur’s Pass offers a unique blend of alpine landscapes, engineering marvels, and natural beauty.

The route was completed in 1923 to link the east and west coasts of the South Island, and it remains one of New Zealand’s most celebrated scenic drives.
