Wanaka to West Coast: New Zealand Campervan Adventure Day 8
Day 8 of our New Zealand South Island campervan adventure took us from the peaceful town of Wanaka to the rugged beauty of the West Coast.
We kicked off the morning by revisiting the iconic Wanaka Tree since it was raining during our visit the evening before. From there, we journeyed through the Haast Pass, making scenic stops at Lake Hawea Lookout, Lake Wanaka Lookout, and the dramatic Gates of Haast. We ended the day at the windswept shores of Ship Creek, taking in the raw beauty of the coast in the late afternoon light.
1: Wanaka Tree (Map)
The Wanaka Tree, famously known as the “lone tree in the lake,” is one of New Zealand’s most photographed natural landmarks. Standing gracefully in Lake Wānaka with the Southern Alps as its backdrop, it captivates visitors with its serene beauty and iconic silhouette.

2. Lake Hawea Lookout (Map)
Lake Hawea Lookout offers breathtaking panoramic views of the deep blue lake set against a backdrop of rugged mountains. It’s a perfect quick stop along the drive between Wanaka and Haast, ideal for capturing stunning photos and soaking in the serenity of New Zealand’s South Island.

4. Gates of Haast (Map)
A dramatic gorge with roaring waters and lush rainforest—this is one of the most striking points along the Haast Pass.

5. Ship Creek (Map)
Nestled where rainforest meets the sea, Ship Creek is a hidden gem on the West Coast. We explored its tranquil boardwalk trails that wind through dune lakes, wetlands, and native forest, then stepped out onto the windswept beach to end our day with the sound of crashing waves and the scent of salt in the air.
