Hi Margene,
First of all, Thanks for reading our blog and leaving a comment! =)
If you're just starting off, I guess the main consideration when deciding on going free or paid platform would be how confident you are that you'll still be writing 1-2yrs down the road!
If you're just taking blogging up as a "hobby"/"interest" and not absolutely sure on how things will turn out, i suggest going for the free platforms first. Advantages (other than obviously being free) are that you could use the free platform as an experiment to explore how blogging is really like and how things are done. Once you have more experience and knows more about what it's really like (and assuming you are still consistently blogging after a few months), you could migrate to the paid platforms.
I know this will take more time (migrating between platforms), but it does really train you up to have a much better expectation on how you really want to build your blog.
I'll leave it here for now. If you need more advice, just leave me a comment.
All the best in your blogging endeavours!
