Day 10 of our South Island campervan trip marked the transition from the rugged West Coast back to the east, with a scenic drive from Hokitika to Christchurch via the renowned Arthur’s Pass.

Arthur’s Pass was chosen as the return route not only for its direct connection to Christchurch, but also for its historical and scenic significance. As the highest and most dramatic of the three main passes across the Southern Alps, Arthur’s Pass offers a unique blend of alpine landscapes, engineering marvels, and natural beauty.

Wanaka to West Coast: New Zealand Campervan Adventure Day 8

Day 8 of our New Zealand South Island campervan adventure took us from the peaceful town of Wanaka to the rugged beauty of the West Coast.

We kicked off the morning by revisiting the iconic Wanaka Tree since it was raining during our visit the evening before. From there, we journeyed through the Haast Pass, making scenic stops at Lake Hawea Lookout, Lake Wanaka Lookout, and the dramatic Gates of Haast. We ended the day at the windswept shores of Ship Creek, taking in the raw beauty of the coast in the late afternoon light.

The Remarkables Ski Area

The afternoon of Day 6 of our Nov2024 New Zealand campervan trip took us up to The Remarkables, one of the most famous mountain ranges in the country. Known for its dramatic jagged peaks and unique north-to-south alignment (one of only two ranges in the world with this orientation), The Remarkables offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including Lake Wakatipu and Queenstown.

Road to The Remarkables

The drive up to The Remarkables Ski Area is breathtaking, as the winding road climbs from Queenstown to an elevation of 1622m. Along the way, there are panoramic views of the Kawarau River, Frankton and Queenstown Airport.

There are two major pullovers that offer postcard-worthy views of Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown and the surrounding mountain ranges. We stopped at these spots to take in the scenery and snap some photos before reaching the end of the road at The Remarkables’ parking lot.

Exploring The Remarkables Ski Area

Since it was after the ski season, the resort was closed, but visitors were free to park and explore the ski area. There was still some snow on the ski area, making the landscape extra scenic.

Fergburger

After taking in the incredible mountain views, we drove back down to Queenstown and headed straight to Fergburger, the town’s most legendary eatery. Often considered a rite of passage for visitors, Fergburger is famous for serving what many say are New Zealand’s best burgers. Open from 8 AM to 4:30 AM daily, it’s a go-to spot whether you’re grabbing lunch or a late-night bite.

To wrap up the evening, we took a short stroll to Queenstown’s main pier and ended the day by the lake, enjoying the peaceful waters of Lake Wakatipu under the night sky.

On Day 5 of our New Zealand South Island campervan adventure, we set off from Te Anau with the rain accompanying us as we made our way toward Queenstown and Glenorchy. Known as the adventure capital of New Zealand, Queenstown was our destination, but we couldn’t resist exploring some of the beautiful sights along the way. Our first stop was at the Devil’s Staircase Lookout Point, a stunning viewpoint located along the shores of Lake Wakatipu. 2. Queenstown-Glenorchy Scenic Drive

After settling in at our campsite in Queenstown, we set off along the famous Queenstown-Glenorchy Scenic Drive. 1: Eglinton Flats (Map)

A picturesque open valley along Milford Road in Fiordland National Park, known for its vast golden tussock plains framed by towering mountains. It’s one of the first major scenic stops when driving from Te Anau to Milford Sound.

2: Christie Falls (Map)

Small but scenic roadside waterfall along Milford Road. Located near Eglinton Valley, it cascades down a lush, moss-covered rock face, making it a refreshing and peaceful stop on the drive to Milford Sound.

Due to weather and time constraints, we only hiked up to Mueller Lake Lookout and crossed the First Swing Bridge, enjoying breathtaking views of glaciers and alpine landscapes before turning back.

Next, we drove to the Tasman Glacier Viewpoint, where a short walk led us to stunning views of New Zealand’s longest glacier and its meltwater lake. Despite the unpredictable weather, it was an unforgettable day exploring the beauty of Mount Cook!

1: Hooker Valley Track (Map)

The Hooker Valley Track is a breathtaking hike in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, featuring scenic boardwalks, swinging bridges, and glacier-fed rivers. The trail culminates at Hooker Lake, where you’re rewarded with stunning, unobstructed views of Aoraki/Mount Cook, often reflected in the icy waters. The entire hike takes about 3 to 4 hours to complete

2: Mueller Lake Lookout and First Swing Bridge (Hooker Valley Track) (Map)

The Mueller Lake Lookout and First Swing Bridge are located next to each other in the initial section of the Hooker Valley Track, making them a great first stop on the hike. It takes approximately 10–15 minutes to reach them from the car park, where you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Mueller Lake, Mount Sefton, and the Hooker River before crossing the scenic swing bridge.

3: Tasman Glacier Viewpoint (Map)

Tasman Glacier is New Zealand’s longest glacier, stretching about 23km down the Southern Alps. The viewpoint provides a unique opportunity to witness this massive glacier up close, along with stunning vistas of the surrounding peaks.

The climb to the viewpoint involves a series of stairs, which can be steep in parts, but the effort is rewarded with dramatic panoramic views of the glacier, icebergs in Tasman Lake, and the majestic mountains surrounding the area. The entire return hike typically takes about 1 to 1.5 hours.
