Planning an Iceland Road Trip: Overview & Tips

Iceland is one of the easiest countries in the world for a self-drive road trip. The entire island is connected by Route 1, commonly known as the Ring Road, which is approximately 1332km long and circles the country, linking most major towns including Reykjavík. More importantly, many of Iceland’s most famous attractions — waterfalls, glaciers, volcanic areas, and coastal viewpoints — are located directly along or just off this road. By planning your itinerary around the Ring Road, you can efficiently cover the majority of Iceland’s highlights without complex navigation or backtracking.

For those visiting in summer, a self-drive itinerary also allows access to Iceland’s interior highlands via designated F-roads, which are only open for a limited period each year and require a 4×4 vehicle. While the Ring Road itself is fully paved and suitable for standard cars, F-roads are gravel tracks that may involve river crossings and rapidly changing conditions.

Key tips for an Iceland road trip:

• Plan at least 10–14 days for a full round-island drive to avoid rushing.
• Summer (June–August) offers long daylight hours and access to highland roads.
• F-roads are only open seasonally and require a 4×4 vehicle; always check road conditions before driving.
• Some F-roads are challenging even for experienced drivers — research carefully and seek local advice if unsure.
• Accommodation outside Reykjavík is limited and expensive; book well in advance, especially in peak season.
• Grocery stops early in the trip help reduce food costs in remote areas.

Day-by-Day Iceland Itinerary (10-Day)

Iceland Itinerary Day 1: Arrival in Iceland

The first day was focused on arrival logistics and settling in after the international flight. Picking up the rental car and stocking up on supplies set the foundation for the road trip ahead. Staying near the airport allowed us to rest and start fresh the next morning.

1.1: Arrive at Keflavík International Airport (KEF)

We touched down at Iceland’s main international airport and picked up our rental car from Blue Car Rental — efficient and essential for exploring Iceland independently.

1.2: Supermarket Stop in Keflavík

Before heading out, we stocked up on groceries and snacks. With Iceland’s remote landscapes and limited dining options outside towns, advance preparation is important.

1.3: Overnight Stay in Keflavík

After a long flight, we stayed overnight in Keflavík to rest and prepare for the journey inland the next day.

Iceland Itinerary Day 2: The Golden Circle Tour Begins

Day 2 introduced us to Iceland’s geology and history through the classic Golden Circle route. Located close to Reykjavík, this loop offers a high concentration of iconic sites in a short driving distance, making it an ideal start to the trip.

2.1: Þingvellir National Park (Thingvellir National Park)

This UNESCO World Heritage Site lies in a rift valley where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. It is also the site of Iceland’s first parliament, founded over 1000 years ago.

2.2: Geysir Geothermal Area (The Geyser Area)

This geothermal field features boiling mud pools and steaming vents, with Strokkur erupting every 5–10 minutes. Water shoots up to 20m into the air during each eruption.

2.3: Gullfoss Waterfall (Golden Falls)

A powerful two-tiered waterfall that plunges into a deep canyon. Gullfoss is one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls and a highlight of the Golden Circle.

Iceland Itinerary Day 3: F208 Highland Road Adventure + Landmannalaugar

This day was dedicated to driving one of Iceland’s highland routes, offering landscapes very different from the coastal Ring Road. Although weather conditions limited access to Landmannalaugar itself, the journey along F208 was a highlight in its own right.

3.1: F208 Road to Landmannalaugar (Map)

A rugged highland gravel road cutting through lava fields and moss-covered valleys. The scenery here represents Iceland’s volcanic interior at its most raw.

3.2: Sigoldufoss Waterfall (Map)

A lesser-known waterfall surrounded by volcanic rock formations. Its quiet setting makes it a rewarding stop along the route.

3.3: Old River Crossing (Bjallavað)

A historic crossing point on the F208 where we stopped for photos and drone footage.

3.4: Hnausapollur (Bláhylur) Viewpoint (Map)

A volcanic crater lake known for its intense blue color. The contrast between the water and surrounding terrain makes it especially photogenic.

3.5: Frostastaðavatn Scenic Viewpoint (Map)

A viewpoint overlooking a volcanic lake framed by lava fields and rhyolite mountains, showcasing Iceland’s diverse geology.

3.6: Landmannalaugar

Landmannalaugar is one of Iceland’s most famous highland destinations, known for its vividly colored rhyolite mountains, geothermal hot springs, and extensive hiking trails. The area is a major starting point for multi-day hikes such as the Laugavegur Trail and is considered a highlight of Iceland’s volcanic interior.

Due to heavy rain, we skipped the final river crossing leading into Landmannalaugar and had to miss out on exploring this nature wonderland.

Iceland Itinerary Day 4: South Coast Waterfall Chasing – 5 Must-See Falls

Day 4 focused on Iceland’s South Coast, home to some of the country’s most accessible and impressive waterfalls. Despite rain and mist, the conditions added atmosphere to each stop.

4.1: Seljalandsfoss

A 60m high waterfall where visitors can walk behind the cascading water. Expect to get wet from the spray.

4.2: Gljúfrabúi (Gljufrabui) (Map)

A hidden waterfall located inside a narrow gorge near Seljalandsfoss. Reaching it requires a short walk through shallow water.

4.3: Skógafoss

Skógafoss is one of Iceland’s largest and most iconic waterfalls, standing about 60m high and 25m wide. Its immense water flow creates heavy mist, often producing vivid rainbows on sunny days.

4.4: Kvernufoss (Map)

A quieter waterfall accessed via a short walk near the Skógar Museum (short drive from Skógafoss). It offers a similar walk-behind experience without crowds.

4.5: Urriðafoss (Urridafoss) (Map)

A wide, high-volume waterfall located near Route 1. While not tall, it is known for its sheer power. The name means “Trout Falls,” reflecting the river’s historical importance as a fishing area.

Iceland Itinerary Day 5: Volcanic Colors & Coastal Cliffs – Kerið + Dyrhólaey

This shorter day focused on two contrasting landscapes: a colorful volcanic crater and dramatic coastal cliffs. Both stops required minimal hiking but delivered strong visual impact.

5.1: Kerið (Kerid)

A volcanic crater with a vivid blue lake surrounded by red and green slopes. A walking path circles the rim, and a small entrance fee applies.

5.2: Dyrhólaey (Dyrholaey)

A prominent headland on Iceland’s South Coast, offering expansive views of black sand beaches, sea cliffs, and the iconic natural rock arch extending into the Atlantic. The area also features a lighthouse at the highest point, which serves as both a navigation aid and a scenic viewpoint overlooking the coastline. In summer, Dyrhólaey is an important seabird nesting area, including puffins, making it a popular stop for both scenery and wildlife.

Iceland Itinerary Day 6: Ice, Waves & Peace – Sólheimajökull, Reynisfjara & Vík

Day 6 highlighted the contrasts of Iceland’s south coast, moving from glacial landscapes to powerful ocean scenery and ending in a quiet village viewpoint.

6.1: Sólheimajökull (Solheimajokull)

An outlet glacier from the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, featuring crevasses and ash-streaked ice. Guided tours are required for glacier walks.

6.2: Reynisfjara (Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach)

Iceland’s most famous black sand beach, known for its jet-black volcanic sand, hexagonal basalt columns, and dramatic coastal cliffs. Offshore, the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rise from the Atlantic and are tied to Icelandic folklore. The beach is also known for powerful sneaker waves, so visitors must keep a safe distance from the shoreline.

6.3: Vík í Mýrdal Church (Vik i Myrdal Church)

A hilltop church overlooking the village of Vík, offering panoramic views of the coastline and offshore sea stacks.

Day 7: Glacier Wonders – Svínafellsjökull, Fjallsárlón, Diamond Beach & Jökulsárlón

This day was spent within Vatnajökull National Park, showcasing Iceland’s most famous glacial landscapes and lagoons.

7.1: Svínafellsjökull (Svinafellsjokull)

An outlet glacier of the Vatnajökull ice cap, with dramatic ice formations and surrounding mountain scenery. Accessible via a short walk from the parking area.

7.2: Fjallsárlón (Fjallsarlon Glacier Lagoon)

7.3: Diamond Beach

Jökulsárlón is Iceland’s most famous glacier lagoon, formed where the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier (an outlet of Vatnajökull) meets the Atlantic. Gigantic icebergs calve from the glacier and drift across the lagoon before floating out to sea, creating a constantly changing and photogenic landscape. The lagoon has appeared in numerous films, including James Bond movies, and is located adjacent to the striking black sands of Diamond Beach.

Day 8: Black Sands, Coastal Beacons & Hidden Waterfalls – Stokksnes, Hvalnes & Fólaldafoss

Day 8 marked our entry into East Iceland, an area known for wide-open landscapes and fewer crowds.

8.1: Stokksnes (Map)

A black sand area dominated by the dramatic Vestrahorn mountain. The shifting sands and sharp peaks make it a popular photography location.

8.2: Hvalnes Lighthouse (Map)

A coastal lighthouse offering sweeping ocean views and a sense of isolation along the rugged shoreline.

8.3: Fólaldafoss (Folaldafoss) (Map)

A quiet waterfall located along Road 939, surrounded by remote and rugged terrain.

Day 9: Basalt Canyons, Volcanic Craters & Legendary Falls – Stuðlagil, Víti & Goðafoss

This day explored the geological highlights of North Iceland, featuring basalt formations, volcanic landscapes, and historic waterfalls.

9.1: Stuðlagil (Studlagil Canyon) (Map)

Stuðlagil Canyon, located in eastern Iceland, is famous for its striking basalt columns and vivid glacial river. Once hidden beneath high water levels, the canyon was revealed in recent years, becoming one of Iceland’s most visually dramatic natural landscapes.

Top Tip: For the best views of Stuðlagil Canyon, park at the main parking lot (map link) and hike approximately 2.4 km to the canyon. This route takes you to the south-east side, where you can also walk down to the water level for an immersive experience.

A new visitor centre and viewing platform (map link) is being built on the north-west side of the canyon. This access requires no hiking but involves descending a set of stairs. Views from this side are limited, and it’s not possible to reach the water level.

9.2: Víti Crater (Krafla)

A geothermal explosion crater with a milky blue lake, located within the active Krafla volcanic area.

9.3: Goðafoss (Godafoss Waterfall)

Goðafoss is one of the country’s most famous waterfalls. Formed by the Skjálfandafljót River, it is about 12m wide and 12m high. The name means “Waterfall of the Gods”, originating from a 10th-century legend in which pagan idols were thrown into the falls after Iceland’s conversion to Christianity.

Day 10: Snæfellsnes Peninsula Loop – Kirkjufell, Ingjaldshóll, Saxhóll & More

The final day looped around the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often described as “Iceland in miniature” due to its varied landscapes.

10.1: Snæfellsnesvegur (Road 54)

A scenic coastal road connecting volcanic craters, fishing villages, and coastal cliffs.

10.2: Kirkjufell (Kirkjufell Mountain)

One of Iceland’s most photographed mountains, known for its distinctive shape.

Iceland has long been famed for its raw and dramatic landscape, a dream destination for any avid landscape photographer. Located between Greenland and Norway, the island nation is at the juncture of the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans. Based on our Jun-2014 Iceland road trip, here are our Iceland Road Trip Planning Tips! 

Iceland: The Land of Fire and Ice

Due to its remoteness, Iceland is the most sparsely populated country in Europe. However, in spite of its geographical location and demographics, it was ranked as the 13th most-developed country in the world in 2013.

Geographically, Iceland is nothing less than a wonderland. Formed around 20-25 million years ago by volcanic eruptions and shaped by massive glaciers, it is aptly known as “The Land of Fire and Ice”. Iceland’s breathtaking beauty can be in part attributed to it being one of the youngest landmasses on the planet. Consequently, Iceland has the most active volcano area in the world while hosting the largest waterfall and glacier in Europe.

The Ring Road (Route 1)

Route planning for an Icelandic road trip is surprisingly simple. The entire island is connected via a Ring Road (Route 1; 1332km total), which circles the island and connects most of the larger towns including its capital Reykjavik.

More importantly, many of the most popular tourist attractions are near or on the Ring Road. This is the only major highway outside the capital and you wouldn’t get lost even if you tried very hard to! Simply complete the Ring Road and you would have covered many of the major tourist spots in Iceland.

Tips for Iceland Road Trip:

• Plan at least 2 weeks for round-island road trips.
• During summer visits, detour from the Ring Road into the interior (highland areas) of the island. The most breathtaking landscapes are found in the highlands. Most (if not all) of the highland roads are marked “F” roads and only accessible by 4×4 vehicles during summer months. (online updates on “F” roads status found here)
• Certain “F” roads are notoriously difficult to drive (especially for tourist in rented 4x4s), seek local advise (or google) before attempting.
• Accommodation outside Reykjavik is especially limited and expensive. Accommodation plans must be made well in advance.

Nonetheless, for visitors fortunate (and well informed) enough to travel to the region, they are handsomely rewarded by some of the most impressive sights and landscapes in Iceland. These include amazing volcanic/thermal formations, an awe-inspiring canyon with multiple waterfalls, and landscapes so “moon-like” that NASA twice sent astronauts there for training. Many travellers to the region choose Mývatn (lake) as their base due to its accessibility (the Ring Road runs through it) and proximity to most major attractions. 5 Greatest Attractions in Northeast Iceland

The following are the 5 Greatest Attractions in Northeast Iceland. (Listed in random order)

#1: Dettifoss, Hafragilsfoss and Selfoss (map)

“Excellent 3x waterfall. But go via Road#864!”

The waterfalls of Dettifoss (height: 45m), Hafragilsfoss (27m) and Selfoss (10m) are in close proximity to each other in the Jökulsárgljúfur National Park and situated on Jökulsá River (which flows from Vatnajökull glacier).

The trio of waterfalls is considered amongst the most remarkable in Iceland. Dettifoss in particular, is the star attraction with the distinction of being Europe’s most powerful waterfall. Definitely a must-visit if you’re in the region.

Tip: How to get to the BEST viewpoint for Dettifoss

From the Ring Road, there are 2 routes to reach the waterfalls. Road#862 takes you to the western side of the waterfalls/river, while road#864 (recommended) take you to the eastern side.

Road#862: Easier drive. Average view of Dettifoss.

#862 is the easier route as the road is fully paved (from Ring Road to Dettifoss/Selfoss carpark). From the carpark, take an easy walk to Dettifoss and Selfoss (2.5km return).

However, the viewing area here is not the optimal point to view Dettifoss. Although you’re looking directly at the waterfall, it is difficult to take a photo of the entire waterfall with its base.

After viewing Dettifoss, continue your way upstream to Selfoss. To view Hafragilsfoss (which is downstream of both Selfoss/Dettifoss), drive out of the carpark and immediately look for an unmarked gravel road on your right (before you reach #862). Follow the gravel road to the end where you’ll find Hafragilsfoss (least scenic of the trio).

Road#864: Gravel road. Excellent view of Dettifoss!

This is a more difficult option as #864 is a gravel road. However during summer months, it shouldn’t post problems even to 2WD cars (unless you’re not comfortable with vibration from driving on gravel).

From the carpark, take a short walk to Dettifoss. This is definitely the better viewpoint of Dettifoss as you can see the full waterfall with its base. Most amazing is that you could walk to the edge of the waterfall. The view here is simply spectacular!

From Dettifoss, take a short hike upstream to Selfoss. To view Hafragilsfoss, proceed back to #864 and drive north for a short distance.

#2: Mývatn Nature Baths (Jarðböðin Við Mývatn) (map)

“Excellent nature bath! Absolute enjoyment after a tiring day!”

An excellent nature bath with great ambience, Mývatn Nature Baths is conveniently located a short distance from Lake Mývatn.

Without doubt the best way to wind down a tiring day of sightseeing, especially if you’ve been chilled to the bone by the weather. Nothing beats warming yourself in the hot nature pool while the ambient temperature is plunging as evening approaches. My advice is to go after dinner (they operate till 11.30pm in summer; 9.30pm in winter) so that you could spend 1-2 hours just soaking in the bath, relaxing and enjoying the surrounding Icelandic scenery. I was there for only 45 minutes and truly regret not being able to stay longer.

It is also a value-for-money nature bath! Blue Lagoon charges 40Euros, while Mývatn Nature Baths charges kr. 3500-4000. Though in all fairness, you’re probably paying for better location/amenities/scenery and a bigger brand name in the Blue Lagoon. However, in terms of the actual bath, I believe both offer similar experiences.

Cost-saving Tip (accurate as of Jun-2014): Lake Mývatn Visitor Centre offers 10% discount on the bath tickets! Great deal since they are only 3 minutes drive away from each other. Downside is that the Visitor Centre closes rather early at 6pm.

#3: Hverarondor Hverir (map)

“Geothermal area right beside Ring Road”

Hverir is a geothermal area with boiling mudpools and steaming fumaroles at the foothill of Námafjall (volcanic mountain).

You’ll be able to see it while driving on the Ring Road and it is just 5 minutes away from Lake Mývatn Visitor Centre. There is a carpark in front of Hverir. Entry fee is payable (just a few euros) at the entrance for the entire area. Námafjall and Námaskarð (sulfur field) are within walking distance from here (see attached map).

If you’ve been to other famous geothermal areas (e.g. wai-o-tapu in New Zealand), you’ll realize that Hverir is rather average by comparison. Having said, a couple of the fumaroles here are pretty impressive with the volume of steams/gases they emit. If you’re around Mývatn, this is definitely a nice place to visit.

#4: Askja (map)

“Out-of-this-world views!”

Askja is a caldera located in the remote central highlands of Iceland and is only accessible for a few months of the year. The area is famous for its moon-like landscapes that prompted NASA to twice send astronauts there for training (for Apollo program).

Travellers to the area typically visit it to view Víti crater and Öskjuvatn Lake, both located adjacent to each other within the massive 50km2 Askja caldera. It is possible to bath in Víti crater during permitting seasons.

Askja is without-doubt one of the must-visit places if you’re in northern Iceland. The 4 hours journey (one-way from Mývatn) itself offers some of the most stunning views in Iceland.

Signing up a Day Tour to Askja

On my last visit to Iceland in Jun-2014, the staffs at Lake Mývatn Visitor Centre strongly advised me against driving my rented Suzuki Vitara to Askja. I promptly followed their advice and signed up for one of the super jeep day tour (~kr. 30,000 per pax). Day tours to Askja don’t come cheap, as with most other products/services in Iceland.

Journey to Askja

Our tour operator picked us up early morning at the Visitor Centre and the journey to Askja would be via the highland route F88. While on F88, it became clear to me why locals advised tourist like myself not to self-drive to Askja; there are at least two deep rivers to ford on F88 and the depth of these rivers would appear to pose serious challenges to your average “urban” 4WDs. Aside from these rivers, the rest of the terrain looks manageable in a Vitara.

Another factor before deciding on whether to self-drive to Askja might be the weather/snow condition. While I was there (end Jun-2014), the snow was still thick (especially nearer to Askja) from the winter. Ultimately, if in doubt, always consult and trust the locals.

Views on F88

The views on F88 are simply magical. One plus point of joining a super jeep tour is that the tour guides will point out to you some of the more scenic spots along the way (including a crater where Tom Cruise filmed Oblivion).

At one of the morning pit stops, our guide showed us views of Mt Herðubreið, a hut at Herðubreiðarlindir and a famous “cave” where one of the local outlaws used to stay during the winter of 1774-1775.

After 4 hours of journey, we reach the ranger station at Dreki campsite. Lunch (self-provided) would be here before departing for the short drive to Askja’s parking area.

Final hike to Víti crater and Öskjuvatn Lake

Once at the parking area, it would be another 40 minutes walk (sometimes in strong wind and thick snow conditions) to reach Víti crater and Öskjuvatn Lake.

At this point, another advantage of taking a super jeep tour surfaced. For visitors who self-drive to Askja in average 4WDs, due to the thick snow, they could be forced to park a distance away from the main parking area and be forced to hike the rest of the way.

For those taking super jeep tours, these monster machines can reach the parking area without much hassle. While for those taking 4WD truck tours, the tour operators will arrange for snow transporters to ferry them to the parking area if the truck cannot reach it.

Breathtaking views at Víti crater and Öskjuvatn Lake

Once at the crater and lake, visitors would be rewarded with magical views and words cannot do justice to how beautiful it is.

Review of our Askja Visit

The only letdown was that we went too early in the summer (end June) and the snow has yet to melt away to reveal the landscape. Furthermore, we could not bath in Víti crater due to the cold. My guide later informed me that the snow would be gone by mid/end July, though this varies year to year.

Nevertheless, the day trip to Askja is more than worth the effort and cost. Views as astonishing as Askja’s are hard to come by.

#5: Godafoss [Goðafoss](map)

“Impressive waterfall!”

Godafoss (or Waterfall of the Gods in Icelandic language) count amongst the most magnificent waterfalls in Iceland. It is situated on the Skjálfandafljót River, and has a height of 12m and width 30m.

An impressive waterfall that is visible from the Ring Road, there is a shop + cafe beside the waterfall. You could view the waterfall from both sides of the river via crossing a pedestrian bridge that is in front of the shop/café.

Surely, Godafoss is a natural wonder that shouldn’t be missed.

Svartifoss, Skaftafell National Park (map)

“1.5hrs return hike to beautiful Svartifoss”

Skaftafell National Park is particularly popular with visitors for its hiking trails, glacier views (Skaftafellsjökull, which is a finger of Vatnajökull) and waterfall (Svartifoss).

Svartifoss (aka “Black Waterfall”) is easily the most popular attraction in the park. Surrounded by black basalt column rock cliffs, Svartifoss has a unique pipe organ look. It can be reached via a 1.5 hours return easy hike. Though not the most majestic of waterfalls in Iceland, it is still stunning by any standards.

The visitor centre at Skaftafell is a short drive from the Ring Road. Once at the visitor centre, there are some large displays near the carpark that will list the hiking routes available and their respective duration. If in doubt, approach the friendly staffs at the visitor centre and they will advice accordingly.

Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon (map)

“Nice little glacier lagoon”

Fjallsárlón glacier lagoon is part of the Vatnajökull National Park and located at the southern end of Vatnajökull.

There are two glacier lagoons in the area, with Fjallsárlón being the smaller of the two. Its larger and more renowned cousin, Jökulsárlón, is located 11km away (via Ring Road) to the northeast.

Though much smaller and relatively less scenic than Jökulsárlón, Fjallsárlón is nonetheless nothing short of breathtaking. Being less prominent, it incidentally exudes more serenity due to the lack of crowd.

Definitely a place worth visiting, Fjallsárlón is a short drive off the Ring Road. As of my visit in Jun2014, there are no facilities/amenities available.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon (map)

“MUST visit site in iceland!”

Situated on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park, Jökulsárlón is formed by the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier receding from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. Large icebergs break off from the glacier and subsequently drift towards the mouth of the lagoon. Here they melt into smaller pieces before finally drifting slowly out towards the Atlantic Ocean.

The view is simply out-of-this-world and the stillness of the lagoon helps to bring out the absolute serenity of the area. Every photographer’s dreamland, take some time to observe the icebergs melting and drifting slowly in the lagoon towards the bridge/sea and be amazed. Surely another must-see site in Iceland!

Tip

Other than the main carpark (where the tour company is and most tourist parks), there are other carparks nearby that give access to some exceptional (and less crowded) viewpoints. Driving out from the main carpark, turn right onto the Ring Road and cross the bridge. Right after the bridge, there are a few smaller carparks on the right (all in close proximity). Drive further down the road till you come to the last of these carparks and park there. There’s a slight upslope in front of the carpark, climb it and you’ll find another panoramic view of the lagoon.

Top 7 Attractions in South Iceland

(Listed in random order. Based on our Jun-2014 road trip)

#1: Seljalandsfoss (map)

“Great waterfall visible from Ring Road”

Though not the biggest or most dramatic waterfall you’ll find in Iceland, it nevertheless is very popular. If driving eastwards on the Ring Road (after passing Selfoss), Seljalandsfoss can clearly be seen some distance away.

At a height of ~60metres, Seljalandsfoss is one of the few waterfalls in Iceland that is possible for visitors to walk behind it (a raincoat would be extremely useful here; expect to be drenched).

Some accommodation can be seen in the area and there’s a café at the carpark that provides good coffee to warm up in the Icelandic cold. There appears to be bus services to some nearby towns.

#2: Skógafoss (map)

“Excellent waterfall. MUST do!”

One of the biggest and most beautiful waterfall in Iceland; little wonder this famed beauty was used as a backdrop for a number of movies. A flight of stairs beside the fall leads to the top and onto some hiking trails.

“The Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in the country with a width of 25 metres (82 feet) and a drop of 60 m (200 ft). Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow is normally visible on sunny days.” (Source, Wikipedia: Skógafoss) 

The waterfall is clearly sign-posted and visible from the Ring Road. You’ll never miss it. There are some accommodation/eatery in front of the waterfall and some visitors were seen camping there.

#3: Mýrdalsjökull Glacier (map)

“Excellent alternative to guided glacier tours”

Mýrdalsjökull is the southernmost and fourth largest glacier in Iceland. It covers an active volcano called Katla.

Accessible with a short walk from the carpark, you could walk onto the glacier without having to join a guided glacier tour. The only drawback is that without crampons/axes (which guided tours would provide) you couldn’t go far up the glacier, as it is too slippery. Having said, the edge of the glacier is flat enough to venture with normal shoes, and offers impressive views of the glacier. Excellent for those whom had never explored glaciers! Hey, it’s free!

Directions to Mýrdalsjökull 

If coming from the west (on Ring Road), soon after passing Skógafoss, look out for road#221 on the left. Turn into #221 (gravel road) and drive a few minutes before reaching the first carpark that has the office of a glacier tour company. You could park here or if you’re lazy to walk, continue driving pass the office and come to a second car park at the end of #221. The second car park is slightly nearer to the glacier (save you an easy 5-10 minutes walk).

#4: Crashed DC-3 Plane (Plus how to get there!)

“A MUST visit while in southern Iceland! Miss and you WILL regret!”

Definitely one of the BEST site in my Iceland road trip. Not many places in the world can boast a military plane wreck on a remote and scenic black sand beach with few tourists. Truly a heaven for photography buffs.

This United States Navy DC-3 (with the United States inscription on the fuselage is still visible) crashed in Nov-1973 with fortunately no fatalities and had remained on the beach since. Actual reason for the crash was not known (at least publically), and there appears to be no attempt to recover the wreck; instead leaving it to the arctic elements for the past few decades.

#5: Reynisfjara, Halsanefshellir, Reynisdrangar and Reynisfjall (map)

“Magical coastline, breathtaking view!”

Simply spectacular! The unique basalt formations, dramatic sea cliffs and mysterious black sand make the area a stunningly scenic coastline. There are a number of prominent features on this coastline:

Reynisfjara (black sand beach)

The most renowned black sand beach in Iceland. With pitch-black volcanic sand covering the entire coastline and relentless waves from the North Atlantic Ocean pounding its shore, this is nature’s beauty at its best.

Halsanefshellir (sea cavern)

Halsanefshellir is a vaulted cavern on the Reynisfjara black sand beach, formed by the uniquely shaped basalt columns at the foot of Reynisfjall (mountain & sea cliff). The cavern is very near to the shoreline and its opening directly faces the sea. As such, the approach to the cavern can be dangerous during strong waves and inclement weather.

Reynisfjall (mountain)

Reynisfjall is the mountain adjacent to Reynisfjara black sand beach. Approximately 340 metres high, Reynisfjall has dramatic sea cliffs on the side facing the beach. Halsanefshellir cavern is at the foot of the cliff, facing the ocean.

Reynisdrangar (3x basalt sea stacks)

Reynisdrangar refers to the 3x basalt sea stacks (~60 metres high) that are slightly off the coast of Reynisfjara black sand beach. The sea stacks can also be view from Vik and Dyrholaey (see attraction #6).

Directions: From the Ring Road turn into road#215 (Reynishverfisvegur), which is a short distance west from Vik. Once on #215, drive to the carpark at the end (carpark is right by the beach). From here, you could view Reynisdrangar sea stack and Reynisfjall Mountain, access Halsanefshellir cavern and Reynisfjara black sand beach. Dyrholaey can be seen in the distance.

#6: Dyrholaey (map)

“Scenic view of the surrounding coastline”

Dyrholaey is a promontory right off the coast, with the steep cliffs on its ocean side. Due to its height, you have a bird’s eye view of the entire coastline; overlooking Reynisfjara (black sand beach), Reynisfjall (Mountain) and Reynisdrangar (sea stacks) in the distance. Puffins are known to populate the cliffs of Dyrholaey during summer.

Directions to Dyrholaey

Just a short driving distance west from Vik and Reynisfjara black sand beach, Dyrholaey can be accessed via road#218 from the Ring Road. There is a carpark at the end of #218.

Tip for visiting Dyrholaey

There is a lighthouse (built 1927) at the top of Dyrholaey. To access, after turning into #218 (from the Ring Road), look out for an unmarked gravel road on the right before coming to the end of #218. Turn into the gravel road (it leads uphill) and drive to the end. Most people miss this gravel road and hence, the chance to visit the lighthouse and its surrounding area which is particularly scenic.

#7: Landmannalaugar (map)

“One of the most magical landscape I’ve ever seen!”

Landmannalaugar is an exceptionally picturesque place in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, which is in the highland (interior) area of Iceland. It is located beside Laugahraun lava field, which was formed around 1477 during an eruption.

Landmannalaugar is most famous for its scenic hiking trails, and is the northern start point of the hugely popular Laugavegur hiking trail (3-4days) to Þórsmörk. There are also a number of short trails, including the impressive 2-hour hike through the Laugahraun lava field to Mt. Brennisteinsalda (“Sulphur Wave” in English) (more details below).

“The Laugavegur is a famous trekking route in South-West Iceland from the hot springs area of Landmannalaugar to the glacial valley of Þórsmörk. It is noted for the wide variety of landscapes that are experienced in just 55 km.” (Source, Wikipedia: Laugavegur)

Drive to Landmannalaugar

There are 3 main routes to Landmannalaugar from the southern Ring Road. This website has more info on the routes.

I took the F225 route (2.5hrs from Hella to Landmannalaugar). The drive itself was nothing short of magical! You’ll cross lava landscape, snow covered mountains, beautiful lakes and streams. I couldn’t help stopping and taking pictures numerous times along the way. The drive itself was worth the trip!

If you’ve never driven 4×4 in off-road conditions, this will simply take your breath away. The route is extremely fun and YET the fording portion is manageable (however, it is best to check with locals before driving as the streams’ volume can vary significantly).

Arriving in Landmannalaugar

Once in Landmannalaugar, proceed to the Ranger hut and ask for advice on which hiking route to take. Based on the time that you have, they will advice you accordingly.

For myself, I took the 2-hour hike to Mt. Brennisteinsalda. The trail took me through Laugahraun lava field and up to the thermal areas of Mt. Brennisteinsalda, before returning via a small but scenic stream behind the ranger hut/cooking area. Exceptional hike!

This United States Navy DC-3 plane wreck is one of the most unusual sights in Southern Iceland. The plane (with the United States inscription still visible on the fuselage) crashed in Nov-1973 with fortunately no fatalities and had remained on the beach since. Actual reason for the crash was not known (at least publicly). There also appears to be no attempt to recover the wreck; instead leaving it to the arctic elements for the past few decades. While planning for our Jun-2014 Iceland road trip, we had little success trying to find the direction to the wreck via online searches. After getting the directions from some locals and physically visiting the wreck (and with some near misfortunes along the way), we decided to document the directions here so that future visitors will have an easier time finding the wreck! Here you can find the directions to DC-3 Plane Wreck.

Tip: There is no formed road to the wreck. You will be driving on sand once you leave the Ring Road. As such, only attempt this drive in a 4×4.

Directions to DC-3 Plane Wreck

• On the Ring Road (if coming from direction of Skogafoss): After Skogafoss you will drive over a small bridge and see road#221 on your left (#221 leads to Myrdalsjokull Glacier).
• At this point immediately start to scan the row of fence on your right. Somewhere soon after, you’ll find a gate along this fence. Go through this gate!
• Once you pass through the gate, drive in the general direction of the sea (you can see tire tracks, just follow) and will soon find the plane.
• Note:
  • There is no stream to cross! (If you have to cross a stream to reach the wreck, it means you’ve used the WRONG gate on the Ring Road)
  • If you’re not driving or you’re in a 2WD car, you could walk from the gate (on the Ring Road) to the plane (~4km walk on flat terrain). 

Update as on 15-March-2016

It was learnt that the local land owners had decided to stop giving vehicle access to the stretch of land between the gate (on the Ring Road) and the plane wreck. This is due to the indiscriminate driving of visitors, which destroyed the local vegetation. It is not clear how long this restriction will last. Having said, visitors could still walk to the plane wreck (parking their cars outside the Ring Road gate). We will continue to update the status of this restriction once we have more info.

Reykjavík: The northernmost capital in the world

Located southwestern of Iceland, Reykjavík is its capital and largest city. While Iceland (as a nation) is famed for its breathtaking and remote landscape, Reykjavík instead is a city that epitomizes modernity.

“The world’s most northerly capital combines colourful buildings, quirky, creative people, eye-popping design, wild nightlife and a capricious soul to devastating effect. 

In many ways Reykjavík is strikingly cosmopolitan for its size. After all, it’s merely a town by international standards, and yet it’s loaded with excellent museums, captivating art, rich culinary choices, and funky cafes and bars.” (Source, Lonely Planet: Reykjavik)

Having visited Iceland for 2 weeks in the summer of 2014, the following is my compilation of the Top 8 Attractions in and around Reykjavík. (Listed in random order)

Attractions around Reykjavik

#1: Sun Voyager

One of the most prominent symbols of Reykjavík, the Sun Voyager sculpture is located in the middle of the city, by the Atlantic Ocean and along Sæbraut highway.

The sculpture was unveiled on 18-Aug-1990 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the city. With the vast Atlantic Ocean as its backdrop, the Sun Voyager’s simplicity and beauty has captivated many visitors since its unveiling.

Definitely one of the must-see icons of the city. Excellent place for photo-shoot. (map)

#2: Harpa

Another prominent symbol of Reykjavík, Harpa is a Concert Hall and Conference Centre with distinctive architecture designs.

A stone throw away from the Sun Voyager and Reykjavík’s old harbor, it too has the dramatic Atlantic Ocean as its backdrop. The entire façade of the building is covered with glass panels of different colours, giving it a unique look especially when viewed from the interior. When visiting, one must surely consign some time to explore Harpa’s interior and appreciate its beauty.

Opened in 2011, Harpa nearly fell victim to Iceland’s 2008 financial crisis. Construction was troubled with uncertainty until the Icelandic government committed to funding the half-completed project.

Certainly another must visit attraction of Reykjavík with its fascinating architecture. (map)

#3: Hallgrímskirkja

Hallgrímskirkja is without doubt the most well-known church in Reykjavík. Towering at an impressive 73 metres, it can be seen from almost everywhere in the compact city.

With a resemblance to the basalt lava flows commonly seen around Iceland, it is the nation’s largest church. Construction took a lengthy 38 years with completion in 1986. A statue of Leifur Eiriksson (the first European to discover America) stands proud in front of the church.

One interesting feature of the church is its observation deck located at the top of the main tower. Visitors could take a lift up to the deck (fee payable) for a bird’s-eye view of the city. Given that Hallgrímskirkja is the sixth tallest architectural structure in Iceland, the observation deck does offer some fantastic view of the city. [Observation deck fee and opening hours]

Highly recommended to visit. The most appealing aspects of Hallgrímskirkja must be its impressive exterior architecture and the observation deck that offers a sweeping view of the city. (map)

#4: Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon geothermal spa (i.e. thermal bath) is one of the most visited attractions in Iceland and hailed as “One of the 25 Wonders of the World” according to National Geographic. It is located ~20km from Keflavík International Airport (arrival point for most international visitors), and ~40km from Reykjavík.

The warm waters in the man-made lagoon contain silica, algae and minerals, giving it a distinctive milky blue shade. With this unique composition and a constant water temperature of 37–40°C, the bath is reputed to help certain skin diseases.

There is a huge unused lagoon outside the main building, which is free for public to explore. Once inside the main building, visitors could pay for entry into the actual lagoon, which is adjacent to the building. Non-patrons are not allowed in the “paid” area (i.e. lagoon), though there is a small viewing area (after the cafe) where non-patrons are allowed to take photos of the lagoon.

Review of Blue Lagoon

As one of the most famous attractions in Iceland, it is definitely worth visiting to check out the scenery (which is pretty amazing) even if you’re not planning to get into the lagoon/bath. The fact that it is near to the airport is a big plus for any visitor in a rush or short stopover.

The only downside is the pricing. As to be expected, it is higher priced compared to other geothermal spas around the island. I’ve visited another geothermal spa on the northern part of the island for approximately half the cost. However in all due fairness, you’re probably paying for better amenities/scenery and a bigger brand name in the Blue Lagoon. (map)

#5: Krýsuvík -Seltun

Krýsuvík is a popular geothermal area on the Reykjanes peninsula, between Keflavík International Airport and Reykjavík. Just 57km (50 minutes drive) from the airport, it is easily accessible.

“It is in the south of Reykjanes in the middle of the fissure zone on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge which traverses Iceland. Krýsuvík consists of several geothermal fields, such as Seltún. Here solfataras, fumaroles, mud pots and hot springs have formed, the soil is coloured bright yellow, red, and green hues.” (Source. Wikipedia: Krýsuvík)

Though colorful and with numerous geothermal features, Krýsuvík is not exactly the most scenic geothermal area in Iceland. If you are planning to explore the rest of the island, chances are you’ll get to see more impressive geothermal areas (e.g. Mývatn in the north). Nevertheless, Krýsuvík’s proximity to Reykjavik and the airport means that it is worth visiting especially for those whom only have a few hours or 1-2 days to explore Iceland. (map)

From the major highway (#41) connecting Reykjavik and the airport, turn onto route #42 and head south. Before reaching the geothermal area, you would pass a deserted but scenic inland lake with black sand beach. Soon after passing the lake, Krýsuvík will be on the right and clearly marked.

Golden Circle – The most popular 1-day tourist circuit from Reykjavik

The Golden Circle is the most popular single-day trip from Reykjavik for most tourist. It consist of the trio attractions of Þingvellir (Thingvellir), Geysir and Gullfoss, which are in relatively close proximity to each other and all within 115km of Reykjavik. The Golden Circle can be attempted via a simple self-drive or joining a day-tour with one of the local travel agents.

#6: Thingvellir National Park (Golden Circle)

Thingvellir (Þingvellir) National Park is an excellent historical and geological site, and is part of Iceland’s famous Golden Circle trio of star attractions. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 due to its historical and geological importance. Approximately 46km (40 minutes) from Reykjavik.

As a historical location, Thingvellir is the site of Althing, Iceland’s first Parliament. It was established in the year 930 and remained at Thingvellir till 1798.

Geological significance

As a geological site, Thingvellir is situated in a rift valley of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge; which separates the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. The continental drift causes the two plates to move away from each other by up to a few centimeters yearly, and the faults (cracks) can clearly be seen in Thingvellir.

Review of Thingvellir National Park

With such historical and geological background, Thingvellir is clearly an attraction not-to-be-missed. Personally, I’m more awed by its geological setting. After all, Iceland is about the only place in the world where a regular tourist (like myself) is able to stand between the Eurasian and North American Plates! (map)

Tip: When at the national park, go direct to the visitor center and ask the staffs for advice on the best walking route to cover the park. This will help to make best use of your time there.

#7: Geysir (Golden Circle)

The Geysir hot spring is located in a geothermal field on the slopes of Laugarfjall hill, 60km (50 minutes) from Thingvellir National Park. It is the hot spring where the English word “geyser” originates.

With such prominence and fanfare, it is a pity that Geysir’s eruption is notoriously unpredictable and infrequent. Fortunately, this geothermal field is also home to the Strokkur geyser, which is about 50 metres away. Strokkur is more predictable and erupts every few minutes, spouting water up to 30 metres into the air.

With such regularity, it is no surprise that there are always throngs of photographers/tourist circling the Strokkur, waiting to witness the next eruption.

The fame of Geysir and the sight of Strokkur’s eruption are more than enough reasons to visit this attraction. Highly befitting its status as one of the trio highlights of Iceland’s famed Golden Circle. The only downside is that there are midges around the area, which can be pretty irritating. (map)

#8: Gullfoss (Golden Circle)

Magnificent and scenic waterfall! A must-visit as part of the Golden Circle circuit. Approximately 110km (1.5 hours) from Reykjavik and only 10km from Geysir, it is the furthest of the Golden Circle trio of attractions. (map)

“Gullfoss (Golden Waterfall) is an iconic waterfall of Iceland offering a spectacular view of the forces and beauty of untouched nature.

Gullfoss is part of the Golden Circle tour, located in South Iceland on the Hvítá (White) river which is fed by Iceland´s second biggest glacier, the Langjökull. The water plummets down 32 meters in two stages into a rugged canyon which walls reach up to 70 meters in height.

Tip: There are 2 levels of viewing. The lower level offers better view as you can walk right up to the edge of the waterfall.
