Tioman Island (Pulau Tioman)

A designated nature reserve, Pulau Tioman (Tioman Island) is ringed by charming beaches while a rocky tropical rainforest dominates its interior.

Visitors to the island would stay at one of the numerous beaches. There are essentially no inland roads on the island, thus the only way to travel between the beaches is via boat.

The island offers a wide variety of accommodations and has a good number of supporting facilities (e.g. restaurants and dive shops) at most of the beaches.

Pulau Tenggol has long been a gem amongst diving enthusiasts in Peninsula Malaysia (West Malaysia). The island is off the eastern coast of Terengganu state and is the southernmost island in a string that includes Pulau Perhentian and the famed Pulau Redang. Join us while we embark on a scuba diving trip to Pulau Tenggol!

Pulau Tenggol

Up until recent years, Pulau Tenggol is an uninhabited island off the coast of Kuala Dungun. Pulau Tenggol has since become a private island with two independently operated resorts which are located in a small bay in the eastern part of the island.

Other than the two resorts, there are no other commercial/civilian entities and activities on the island. Unsurprisingly, the main activity on the island is water-based (i.e. scuba diving and snorkelling).

Resorts on Pulau Tenggol

The two resorts are:

• Tenggol Coral Beach Resort.
• Tenggol Island Beach Resort.

Both resorts offer relatively simple accommodation options and are all-inclusive (since there are no other amenities on the island).

Mobile network on the island is essentially nil. Thus, visitors have to purchase wifi access from their respective resorts.

Kuala Dungun

Access to Pulau Tenggol is solely by boat (approximately 45 minutes) from Kuala Dungun. Both resorts operate their respective daily boat service from Dungun.

For Tenggol Coral Beach Resort, their daily boat service departs from the jetty of Riverbank Dungun Guesthouse & Café. Thus, many visitors spend a night at the guesthouse before catching the boat service the next morning. The guesthouse offers basic accommodation. Visitors driving to Dungun can park (secured parking) their car at the guesthouse (for a daily fee) while travelling to Pulau Tenggol.

As a town, Dungun used to be a port serving an inland iron mining town. Iron mining was done in the area from the 1940s up till the 1980s. Nowadays, Dungun is a sleepy coastal town devoid of much commercial/tourist activities.

Scuba Diving at Pulau Tenggol

For our trip, we opted to stay at the larger and more popular Tenggol Coral Beach Resort.

The weather was unfortunately cloudy during the first two days of our 4D3N trip. Luckily, the sky started to clear up on our last day of diving and we finally saw something SPECIAL on the 8th and FINAL dive of the trip. We were rewarded with a majestic sight of about 20 humphead parrotfish! The trip was not in vain after all.

Initially, we just saw one popping back to the left of the coral. Then we saw a second on the top of the coral. Two was already exciting enough until we turned the corner and saw the whole gang at the back! (see video below)

What a sight!

This is why you go diving. Period.

Kota Kinabalu (Sabah, Malaysia)

Located on the northwest coast of Borneo facing the South China Sea, Kota Kinabalu is the state capital of Sabah, Malaysia. With a population of 500,000, the city lies ~90km west of Mount Kinabalu.

The city has its roots in the 19th century when the British North Borneo Company (BNBC) first set up a settlement in the area. It was named “Jesselton” after Sir Charles Jessel, then the vice-chairman of BNBC.

Jesselton was destroyed by the Japanese during World War II. Rebuilding efforts started shortly after the war. By 1946, the British Crown had declared Jesselton the new capital of North Borneo.

After the formation of Malaysia in 1963, North Borneo was renamed Sabah. Subsequently, Jesselton was renamed Kota Kinabalu in 1967, Kota being the Malay word for City and Kinabalu after the nearby Mount Kinabalu.

With an elevation of 4,095 m, Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in both Borneo and Malaysia. It is also the third-highest peak of an island on Earth.

#1: Desa Dairy Farm (Kundasang)

Located at the foothill of Mount Kinabalu, this operational cattle farm is extremely popular with tourists looking for postcard views of the majestic mountain. The farm also retails its dairy products (e.g. ice cream, milk, yoghurt) onsite and offers visitors the chance to feed the cattle.

• Adult (13 years and above) RM 5
• Child (7-12 years) RM4
• Online booking required for tickets.

#2: Hooga Cafe (Kundasang)

The most famous and best (we’ve tried!) cafe in Kundasang. Along the route to Desa Dairy Farm and Sosodikon Hill.

#3: Sosodikon Hill (Kundasang)

Small viewing platform that offers a panoramic view of Mount Kinabalu and the surrounding hills. Due to its popularity, the platform gets crowded during peak periods. There is a limit of 5 minutes for viewing during such times.

Two routes lead to Sosodikon Hill and both are in bad condition. Do seek local advice before driving there. Along the route to Desa Dairy Farm. Just after Hooga Cafe.

#4: Kokol Haven Resort Cafe (Kota Kinabalu)

Resort with a cafe that offers a splendid bird-eye view of Kota Kinabalu city.

#5: Island Hopping Tour (Kota Kinabalu)

Island hopping tour is one of the must-do activities while in Kota Kinabalu. There are several small islands just off the coast of the city.

All tours depart from Jesselton Point Jetty. You could purchase tickets directly from the jetty’s main counter. No booking is required. You could also rent snorkelling equipment and make bookings for water activities at the same counter. The tours typically start between 8 to 9 am. Thus, do reach the jetty by 8 am to purchase the tickets.

There are tour options for visiting 1 to 4 islands. But it is advisable to stick to a maximum of 2 due to time constraints. Once you’ve purchased the tickets, the staff at the main counter will assign you to one of the authorised tour operators to brief you on the tour details (e.g. timing, boat) and collect your rental equipment (if any). Each tour operator will start a boat once enough people fill it. Most tour operators will schedule a last return trip from the islands by 4.30 pm.

The tours does not include meals. However, food outlets are available on the islands.

Price:

• 1 Island Price: Adult RM35, Child RM30
• 2 Island Price: Adult RM45, Child RM40
• 3 Island Price: Adult RM55, Child RM50
• (Prices inclusive of Terminal Fee, but excludes Sabah Parks Conservation Fee)

#6: Welcome Seafood Restaurant (Kota Kinabalu)

Being a coastal city, it is unsurprising that Kota Kinabalu is a seafood hub. Food establishments in the city are known for serving fresh seafood at great prices.

With three outlets in the city, Welcome Seafood Restaurant is one of the biggest seafood restaurant. With both halal and non-halal sections. Surely a must-visit.

#7: Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort (Kota Kinabalu)

With a wide and clean shoreline, Pantai Dalit (Dalit Beach) is one of the most stunning beaches in Kota Kinabalu. The beach is approximately 30km from the city centre and hosts the luxurious Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort at its northern end. Much of the area in the southern part of the beach is undeveloped and lacks properly paved roads for access. Thus, visitors are adviced to access the beach via the resort. The resort is open to the general public and even provides free parking.

Looking for an affordable and exciting go-karting experience in Johor, Malaysia? RUD Karting is the answer!

Got to know about this relatively new karting circuit from Facebook and decided to check them out over the June (2022) school holidays. The experience was so positive that we ended up visiting them 3 times over the month and chalking up a total of 6 sessions (10-minutes each).

The key attractions were their excellent rates, great karts and fantastic track. Even their basic karts were fairly fast, unlike the “kiddy” rides that you’ll find in many touristy kart circuits. We can confidently recommend this place as a “must-visit” for anyone looking for some adrenaline-pumping amateur racing!

Things to do in Penang

Penang is made up of two parts: Penang Island and Seberang Perai. Penang Island is located a short distance off the mainland of Peninsula Malaysia. And Seberang Perai is the area on the mainland bordering Penang Island.

Penang Island is connected by two road bridges (Penang Bridge and Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge) to the mainland (Seberang Perai). The two are also the longest road bridge in Malaysia. In particular, Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge (aka Penang Second Bridge) is the longest oversea bridge in Southeast Asia. 

Most of the top things to do in Penang are located on Penang Island.

Based on our Penang self-drive road trip in Nov-2019, below is the list of attractions which we felt are the top things to do in Penang. (Listed in random order)

(#1) Snake Temple (蛇庙)(video)

The temple is said to be built in 1805 to honour a Buddhist monk (Chor Soo Kong) who was a healer. The monk was widely respected in the local community for his virtue, wisdom and service. In addition, the monk also gave shelter to snakes from the nearby jungle. Upon the temple’s completion (after the monk’s passing), snakes mysteriously turn up at the temple, thus its name.

Snake Temple is located in an industrial zone next to Penang International Airport (at the southeastern tip of Penang Island).

The temple itself is rather small. There is a small car park and several souvenir/food stalls in front of the temple. Parking here is a flat rate of RM2. Payable to the “parking attendant” who will approach your car once you stop.

The snakes in the temple are found in an “enclosure” behind the main prayer hall. Here, the snakes typically rest on the tree branches during the day. With sprinklers sporadically spraying water on the trees, presumably to help the reptiles deal with the heat. The snakes are said to be harmless (i.e. non-venomous). Though we’re not exactly keen enough to get close to them to authenticate this statement.

(#2) KekLokSi Temple (极乐寺)(video)

Situated at the foot of Air Itam Mountain, on the edge of George Town, KekLokSi is by far the most intriguing and captivating destination that we’ve visited in Penang. Surely a must-visit for anyone visiting Penang Island.

KekLokSi, which translate to “Temple of Paradise”, is the largest Buddhist Temple in Malaysia. Indeed, with a history of 128 years (as of 2019), the temple is one of the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia.

The most prominent feature of the temple’s vast complex is its statue of GuanYin (Goddess of Mercy). At 30.2m tall, the GuanYin statue is housed within a 60.9m three-tiered roof pavilion. And is located at the upper sections of KekLokSi, overlooking the city. The current GuanYin statue was completed in 2002. To replace an earlier statue (build in 1977) which was damaged by rain and fire in 1993.

Inclined lift

Given that KekLokSi is situated along the slopes at the foothill of Air Itam Mountain, the temple built an inclined lift to help devotees and visitors get around the various sections of the complex. There are four stations in the inclined lift system:

Carparks

It is possible to drive up to the base of GuanYin Statue. There are three carparks at the temple complex (including one at GuanYin Statue).

Parking is a flat rate of RM3 per vehicle at all the carparks.

However, note that the number of parking lots at GuanYin Statue and Main Prayer Hall is limited. And it can be a struggle to get a lot during peak periods.

(#3) Penang Hill (video)

Located 9km west of George Town, Penang Hill is a hilltop resort made up of various peaks. Highest of which is Western Hill at 833m above sea level. While Flagstaff Hill (735m) is the most developed and the focal point of the hilltop resort.

The main characteristic that led to the popularity of Penang Hill, even during colonial times, is its cooler climate. The hilltop is typically 5-degrees cooler than the surrounding lowlands. This made it ideal for early British settlers looking for a reprieve from the tropical heat. Thus laying the foundation for Penang Hill’s transition into its present-day status as the top tourist draw on Penang Island.

Penang Hill Funicular Railway

The line at Penang Hill is the only funicular railway system in Malaysia. At 2km in length, it is said to be the longest funicular track in Asia. While the track’s tunnel section is the steepest in the world. Construction on the line started in 1920. And the service was opened to the public on 21-Oct-1923. A major overhaul was done in 2010, and it has remained in the state till today.

For the general public, Penang Hill Funicular Railway is the only motorised means of ascending Penang Hill. Its base terminal station (Penang Hill Lower Station) is located at the end of Hill Railway Station Road (Jalan Bukit Bendera). While the upper terminal station is situated near the peak of Flagstaff Hill. There are several smaller stations located along the line. However, these mid-line stations are exclusively reserved for Penang Hill’s residents and are bypassed during normal train operations.

Train fares: RM30/RM15 return (Adult/Child) | Duration: 3-4 minutes per way

Attractions on Penang Hill

The main attractions on Penang Hill include viewing decks, The Habitat, Love Lock and hiking trails.

Viewing decks (free): There are a few viewing decks located next to the upper terminal station at Flagstaff Hill. All of which offers panoramic views of George Town. The latest addition is a 360-degree platform called SkyWalk. Entry is free.

The Habitat (fees payable): The Habitat touts itself as “the most authentic, diverse and educational Malaysian rainforest experience”. It consists of a treetop walk, canopy walk, trails, gardens, cafes and zip-lines. Fees payable for both entry and activities. There is a ticketing outlet at the base terminal station.

Love Lock platform (free): Opened in 2014, Love Lock is located next to the food court on Flagstaff Hill (and near to the upper terminal station). It is an 80m-long viewing platform with a fence for lovebirds to secure their padlocks. The platform is free. However, there is a huge “Love” lettering that would require fees for photography.

Hiking trails (free): There are four nature walk trails on Penang Hill (start from the upper terminal station). These trails range from 1.5km to 3.1km. And offers hikers a glimpse of the range of floral and fauna in the area.

Our Verdict: Penang Hill

We didn’t explore The Habitat as the entry/activity fees seem overpriced. There are plenty of other destinations that offer similar (or better) activities at more friendly rates.

For the nature walk trails, we tried doing the 2.5km-long trail #3. We walked close to a third of the distance (passed the Heritage Post Box) before deciding to turn back as there wasn’t anything interesting up to that point.

Overall, only the views from the hilltop, the ride on the funicular railway and the cooler temperature made Penang Hill worthwhile as a brief 2-hour trip; provided that the queue for the funicular railway is short.

(#4) Gurney Drive Hawker Centre (video)

As with most countries in Southeast Asia, Malaysia is famed for its extensive variety of delicious yet low-priced street food. And the most popular place on Penang Island for tourist looking to satisfy their taste buds is Gurney Drive Hawker Centre.

Located next to the modern Gurney Plaza shopping mall, Gurney Drive Hawker Centre is your typical Asian-style open-air roadside cooked-food market. Here, you can find many of the popular street food unique to both Malaysia and the region.

Given Gurney Drive’s popularity, the hawker centre does start to fill up rather early, especially on weekends and peak seasons. Thus, do arrive early. And given its open-air setup, it’s probably not a good idea to visit when it’s raining.

Opening hours: Early evenings till late night.

Parking: There is limited on-street parking next to the hawker centre. Else park at Gurney Plaza and walk over. 

Our verdict: Gurney Drive Hawker Centre

Online reviews of the food here are somewhat of a mixed bag. And we received feedback from our readers that the standard had dropped in recent years. For ourselves, though not a foodie, we found the various cuisines that we tried ranging from average to good. And learnt that long queues here don’t necessarily equate delectable food. Price-wise, get ready to fork out slightly more compared to other “local-centric” hawker centres on the island.

(#5) Restoran Zim Sum (點心之家)(video)

An unexpected gem find during our Penang trip!

We stayed at a hotel in the adjacent alley and happened to stumble upon this tim sum restaurant as we were driving out one morning. Attracted by the large crowd and huge setup, we decided to give it a try the next morning. And it sure didn’t disappoint!

The restaurant is spacious, clean and neat. And the service is quick. The range of tim sum here is impressive and everything we ordered is mouth-watering. Most importantly, we were glad that the price is extremely reasonable. We were stuffed by the end of the meal and it only cost RM37 for the two of us.

It was only much later that we learnt that Restoran Zim Sum is one of the most popular tim sum restaurant on Penang Island. Having a long history and best known for its cheap and delectable tim sum cuisines.

Opening hours: Daily 6am to 2pm.

 (#6) George Town: Historical Town and Penang Street Art

No visit to Penang Island is complete without exploring the island’s historical town centre and Instagram-worthy street art!

Historical Town (video)

The first British colony in Southeast Asia, George Town was established as a transhipment port by the British’s East India Company in 1786. In the decades that follow, George Town would attract traders and settlers from all over the region (and beyond) due to its strategic location along major trading routes.

Over time, the city became a melting pot of various ethnicities and religions. Resulting in a unique blend of both colonial and Asian cultures and architectures, many of which are still preserved today. It is for this reason that George Town was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.

Especially interesting are the various ethnic precincts (e.g. Chinatown, Little India), religious buildings, jetties, clan houses and colonial structures.

Other than the cultural and architectural attractions, Penang has, in recent years, become famous for its thriving street art scene. Which is mainly in the form of wall paintings and sculptures.

(#7) Clan Jetties

During the late 19th century, many immigrants from China arrived at Penang and settled here. A small group then began to build their houses on stilts (above water) along the shorelines of George Town. Over time, other families started following suit and built their residences next to those with their same surname.

As more families construct their houses along the shoreline, wooden walkways (resembling piers) were constructed to extend the settlement further into the sea. With each pier housing the families of the same surname. Thus, resulting in the unique Clan Jetties that we see today.

The families (jetties) here include the surname of Ong, Lim, Chew, Tan, Lee, Yeoh and Koay.

Our verdict: Clan Jetties

A unique sight and attraction in George Town. Definitely worth visiting.

Of the various jetties, we managed to explore the two most prominent ones, Chew Jetty (姓周桥, video) and Lee Jetty (姓李桥, video).

Chew Jetty is one of the longest and most tourist-oriented of the jetties. With the jetty lined with retail shops and food stalls, all of which are converted from family homes. There is even a small temple at the end of the alley.

On the other hand, Lee Jetty, though short and deprived of the commercial activities found in Chew Jetty, is beautifully decorated with LEDs. However, the LEDs only light up in the evenings from 6pm. Making Lee Jetty more suitable for evening visits.

Note: Though visitors are welcome to explore the jetties, many of the houses are still current family homes of the residents. Thus, be mindful and do not intrude the privacy of the residents. Do not enter any property that is not specifically stated to be a commercial outlet.

(#8) Hean Boo Thean GuanYin Temple (玄母殿)(video)

Hean Boo Thean GuanYin Temple (玄母殿, 南海观世音菩萨) is a small and peaceful temple built along the shorelines next to the clan jetties. The temple dates back to 1972 and was most recently renovated in 2012.

The temple’s main structure is a small two-storey building.

On the ground level, there is a large open-air deck (built on water) with two small pavilions flanking a centre altar. On the second level, there is an air-conditioned room housing a statue of GuanYin. From the second level, one could have a sweeping view of the clan jetties and sea.

Our verdict: Hean Boo Thean GuanYin Temple

Despite its prime location (5-10 minutes walk from the clan jetties), we were the only tourist there during our visit.

The temple has a serene atmosphere to it. Other than its religious significance, perhaps the next most appealing feature is its sweeping views. A great place to take in some peace while enjoying the views.

Seeing the success that Penang (George Town) had in her collaboration with the talented Lithuanian artist, Ernest Zacharevic, Ipoh followed suit. The city’s tourism board, with OldTown White Coffee* as sponsor, worked with Ernest Zacharevic on a series of mural in its old town. This, in turn, prompts other local artists to independently start work on various street art in the area. Resulting in the flourishing street art scene in present-day Ipoh.

Ipoh Street Art that we’ve visited (images)

Interesting fact: As part of the campaign with OldTown White Coffee, Ernest Zacharevic had originally painted 7 murals in Ipoh old town. The 7th mural was named “Girl with Stool”. However, this mural was painted over in late-2017. Till this day (Dec-2019), the various bronze nameplates (found at each of the surviving murals) still record the presence and original location of the “Girl with Stool” mural. 

Old Uncle with Coffee Cup (Artist: Ernest Zacharevic, Mural#1)

This mural is located at the end of a row of shophouses right in the historical centre of Ipoh old town. It depicts an elderly Chinese man enjoying his cup of (presuming) white coffee, which originates from Ipoh.

Given that OldTown White Coffee is the sponsor of this series of street art, it is unsurprising for the theme of this mural and that a branch of the restaurant chain is housed within this row of shophouses.

Paper Plane (Artist: Ernest Zacharevic, Mural#2)

This mural is painted around 4-5 stories high along the side of a building in the adjacent street to the “Old Uncle with Coffee Cup” (above). It depicts two young boys exploring the surroundings on the back of a giant paper plane. Surely the dream of many young kids.

Kopi-O (Artist: Ernest Zacharevic, Mural#3)

The murals “Kopi-O” and “Hummingbird” (see below) are located at the opposite ends of a huge make-shift carpark (fees payable) at the edge of the old town near to Kinta River.

“Kopi” is the Malay word for coffee, while “O” is the Hokkien (a Chinese dialect) word for black. Thus, “Kopi-O” literally means black coffee. As opposed to “Kopi” which refers to coffee with condensed milk.

This mural shows the traditional way of drinking take-away coffee from a straw and plastic bag (tied with a nylon string at one of the top ends). It shows the plastic bag emptying (from left to right) as someone is enjoying the fragrant brew.

Hummingbird (Artist: Ernest Zacharevic, Mural#4)

The murals “Kopi-O” (above) and “Hummingbird” are located at the opposite ends of a huge make-shift carpark at the edge of the old town. This mural depicts a giant hummingbird coming back to a real tree.

Evolution (Artist: Ernest Zacharevic, Mural#5)

The “Evolution” mural is located a short walk from the “Hummingbird”. It pays tribute to Ipoh’s heydays of tin mining.

Prior to the discovery of tin in the area, Ipoh was a village. After tin deposits were found, Ipoh swiftly grew into a major town. Unfortunately, the depletion of its tin deposits coupled with a reduction in the raw material’s price led to the eventual decline of the town for the next few decades.

Trishaw (Artist: Ernest Zacharevic, Mural#6)

The “Trishaw” mural depicts a middle-aged Chinese man collecting used cardboards and discarded materials for recycling. Scenes like this are not uncommon in towns/cities around the region even till this day. Those in the trade typically collect the items from various sources around the area to be sold (by weight) to the local recycling plants. A truly backbreaking and thankless trade to engage in. And a testimony to the grit and hardworking nature of the locals.

Penang Street Art

As early as 2012, Penang’s municipal council decided to spice up the art scene in the old sections of George Town. Consequently, the council collaborated with Ernest Zacharevic, a young and promising Lithuanian artist, to start work on a series of mural depicting nostalgia every-day scenes from the past decades. Resulting in a string of captivating wall paintings spread across central George Town.

Following the initial success of these street art pieces, the council started work with a local art company on a series of steel rod caricature sculptures. And along the way, many local artists start to contribute to the ever-growing list of wall paintings in George Town. All of which help to build up the fame and popularity of Penang Street Art amongst local and foreign visitors.

Top Things to do in Langkawi

Langkawi, in the native Malay language, translates to “island of the reddish-brown eagle”. Administratively, it is an archipelago of approximately 99 islands in the Andaman Sea. With its main island officially known as Langkawi Island.

With a wide variety of attractions, Langkawi is perfect as a short one-week getaway for both domestic and international visitors. Below, we list down the top things to do for your holiday in Langkawi. (Listed in random order)

#1: Eagle Square (Dataran Helang)

Any visit to Langkawi would not be complete without a trip to Eagle Square. Located at the south-eastern tip of the island, Eagle Square is a promenade at the edge of Kuah, the biggest town on Langkawi.

The most prominent structure at Eagle Square is the 12m tall statue of a reddish-brown eagle about to take flight. Reminding visitors of the origins of the island’s name. If you’re visiting close to sunset, do stay around and wait for the spotlights to illuminate the statue.

Our tip for Kuah: Kuah has a good number of restaurants and duty-free retail shops. For those looking for Chinese food, try this popular restaurant that serves cheap and tasty Chinese cuisines. If you’re looking for discounted sportswear, try this duty-free sports outlet near to the restaurant.

#2: Seven Wells Waterfall

For those looking to enjoy nature, just head to Seven Wells Waterfall. It is the most popular waterfall in Langkawi and is a short drive from the famed SkyBridge.

Seven Wells Waterfall is made up of two areas. The top of the waterfall is named “Seven Wells”, and consist of a series of rock pools and an observation platform. While the bottom of the waterfall offers frontal view of the fall with a small plunge pool.

Visiting Seven Wells Waterfall

There is a parking area at the entrance to Seven Wells Waterfall. The parking fee is a flat rate of RM2 per car.

There are a couple of street food stalls next to the parking area. No food vendors would be available in the waterfall from this point onwards.

Hike up to Seven Wells Waterfall

From the parking area, visitors would hike up a series of stairways to reach the waterfall. There is a road (only accessible to authorized vehicles) running parallel to the stairway during the initial part of the hike. However, due to its extremely steep gradient, visitors are not advised to walk on the road.

After climbing 10 minutes (230m horizontal distance), visitors will come to a branch-off. From here, follow the branch-off (turn left) for another 100m walk to reach the bottom of the waterfall (view of waterfall + plunge pool).

To reach the top of the waterfall, ignore the branch-off and continue the climb on the stairway for another 15 minutes (250m).

Top vs Bottom of Seven Wells Waterfall

Though the climb to the top of the waterfall (Seven Wells) requires some effort, it is surely worth it. The view from the “half-bridge” observation platform is great. And the SkyCab cable car can be seen in the distance. The rock pools here provide visitors with a refreshing dip, especially after the hike. Also, certain parts of the rock pools double up as water slides.

For the bottom section of the waterfall. Although there is no landscape view here, visitors are still rewarded with the full frontal view of the waterfall. Not to mention that the plunge pool here is deeper compared to the rock pools at the top.

For those visiting, we recommend first making the full hike to the top of the waterfall for the view and rock pools. And then exploring the bottom of the waterfall while on the way back to the entrance.

Total hike(to top of waterfall): 638 steps/480m climb (horizontal distance)

Toilet facilities: Both the top and bottom of the waterfall have basic toilet facilities.

#3: SkyBridge, SkyCab, SkyGlide (Oriental Village)

SkyBridge is perhaps the most photographed attraction on Langkawi. The curve suspension bridge is situated 660m above sea-level at the peak of Mount Machinchang on the western part of Langkawi island.

To reach the SkyBridge, visitors have to take the SkyCab cable car service from the base of Mount Machinchang to its peak. The base station of SkyCab is located within an entertainment compound called Oriental Village at the foot of the mountain.

Oriental Village

The compound consists of the SkyCab’s base cable car station, various meagre attractions (e.g. 6D Cinemotion, Sky Dome, Sky Adventure Park, SkyRex, 3D Art Museum), a couple of touristy retail outlets, restaurants and a small non-air-conditioned food court.

The undisputed crowd-puller here is SkyCab (which leads to SkyBridge). The rest of the attractions felt distinctly underwhelming. Almost as if they were deliberately built to jump on the SkyCab/SkyBridge bandwagon. We shall not be elaborating on these meagre attractions.

Ticketing

The tickets for all attractions within Oriental Village (including SkyCab) is to be purchased at the cable car base station. (Note: Tickets for SkyBridge and SkyGlide are to be purchased on the mountain top at SkyCab’s Top Station.)

It is telling that there is no option to solely purchase the tickets of SkyCab. Instead, visitors are forced to choose between 4 combo packages (Basic Package, Combo A/B/C. See image below). All of which includes a few of the underwhelming attractions bundled with SkyCab.

Needless to say, since our priority is the SkyBridge, we opted for the cheapest package (Basic Package) during our visit.

Basic Package (international visitor price)

• Adult: RM55, Child: RM40
• Includes: SkyCab, Sky Dome (3D space simulator ride), SkyRex (3D simulator ride), 3D Art Museum (trick eye museum)

SkyCab

According to the operator, SkyCab’s free span length of 950m makes it the world’s longest free span single rope cable car service. It also claims to have the world’s steepest gradient.

There are three cable car station:

• Base Station (SkyCab ticketing booth)
• Middle Station (observation platform)
• Top Station (observation platform + access to SkyBridge)

Top Station has two circular viewing platforms offering great elevated views of both the island and SkyBridge. It is also the only access point to SkyBridge.

SkyCab facts:

• Opened: Jan-2003
• Horizontal distance: 2079m (Base Station to Top Station)
• Round trip time: 28 minutes
• Top Station altitude: 705m above sea-level

Tip: When ascending via SkyCab, many tourists make a stop at Middle Station to take in the view. However, this usually results in a long queue for the cable car at Middle Station. To avoid the queue, we recommend skipping Middle Station and going directly to the Top Station for its observation platforms and SkyBridge.

SkyBridge and SkyGlide

Built in 2004, SkyBridge is one of Langkawi’s most popular attraction. It is said to be the world’s longest curve suspension pedestrian bridge.

SkyBridge is only accessible via Top Station. And is a relatively easy 10 minutes’ walk (via a series of stairs) from it. Alternatively, there is a “cabin-style escalator” (SkyGlide) that transport visitors directly to SkyBridge. SkyGlide is strongly recommended for visitors who have movement difficulties.

The tickets for both SkyBridge and SkyGlide can only be purchased at Top Station. They cannot be purchased at the Base Station. And note that it is common for SkyBridge/SkyCab to be closed due to bad weather (e.g. rain).

SkyBridge/SkyGlide Ticketing

• SkyBridge (walk from Top Station to SkyBridge): RM5/3 (Adult/Child)
• SkyBridge + SkyGlide: RM15/10 (Adult/Child)
• Opening hours: 9.30am to 7pm (subject to weather conditions)

• Opened: Feb-2005
• Total Length: 125m (curve)
• Altitude: 660m above sea-level

#4: Perdana Quay Lighthouse

A short drive from Oriental Village and Seven Wells Waterfall is a charming lighthouse that most tourist overlook.

Located in Telaga Harbour Park (Pantai Kok area), Perdana Quay Lighthouse is a lovely landmark overlooking the Strait of Malacca. Visitors can drive up to the lighthouse via a short dirt track. And the area around the lighthouse is peaceful due to the lack of crowds. Definitely a great place to chill out, enjoy some scenery and take in the lapping sound of waves during late afternoons.

#5: Pantai Cenang Beach

The most popular beach town on Langkawi, and rightly so. Pantai Cenang is situated at the southern tip of the island. And is a mere 10 minutes’ drive from its airport.

Great for swimming

As a beach, Pantai Cenang has a long and clean shoreline with good width. The sands are white, while the water is clear. Though not as crystal clear as some other destinations in the region.

Pantai Cenang is well suited for swimming. As its relatively shallow seabed extends a good distance into the ocean and the waves are mild. Making it ideal for novice swimmers and children. Plenty of water-related activities is available here (e.g. parasailing, jet skiing).

Trendy beach town

As a town, Pantai Cenang play host to the most diverse range of tourism-based establishments on Langkawi. Restaurants, cafes, retail outlets, accommodations, spas and other tourist-related businesses dot Pantai Cenang’s main street. Making this the most trendy town on the island after dark.

With such a high concentration of amenities and a good beach, it is unsurprising that many visitors choose to stay in/around Pantai Cenang. For the same reasons, we had stayed at a budget hotel in Pantai Cenang during our Jun-2019 trip. (Refer to our review on Sri Embun Resort)

#6: Night Markets (Pasar Malam) on Langkawi

In the native Malay language, “Pasar Malam” refers to night market. As with many countries in the region, night markets are an integral part of the local community. Enabling both locals and tourist to mingle around and indulge in colourful local cuisines.

On Langkawi, night markets operate every day of the week at different locations across the island. The locals have an agreed system that each night of the week is permanently assigned to a specific night market.

Night Market Schedule on Langkawi

• Mondays: Ulu Melaka Night Market 
• Tuesdays: Kedawang Night Market 
• Wednesdays/Saturdays: Pekan Kuah Night Market (Kuah) 
• Thursdays: Temonyong Night Market (Pantai Cenang) 
• Fridays: Ayer Hangat Night Market 
• Sundays: Padang Matsirat Night Market 

During our trip, we had the opportunity to visit Pekan Kuah Night Market (Wednesday) and Temonyong Night Market (Thursday). Compared to those in major cities, night markets here are much smaller in scale. However, it is still a great experience to join in the crowds and get our hands on some cheap and delicious local snacks.

#7: Pulau Payar snorkelling day-trip

Pulau Payar is a small uninhabited island with marine park status 35km south of Langkawi. From Jetty Point (beside Eagle Square, Kuah), it is a 1-hour ferry ride to Pulau Payar.

The island is a popular snorkelling and diving spot due to its marine life and corals. Snorkelling day-trips to Pulau Payar is one of the most popular day-tours amongst tourist on Langkawi. Thus, most travel agents on the island offer such packages.

Pulau Payar day-trip packages

There are two variants to the snorkelling day-trips offered by travel agents. Visitors can choose between shore-based snorkelling or platform-based snorkelling.

Pulau Payar Packages: Similarities

Both shore and platform-based snorkelling packages are usually all-inclusive. They typically include pick-up/return (only for major towns), ferry, lunch, bottled water (limited), life jacket, snorkel/mask.

The pick-up time is usually around 8.30am. With a drop-off time of around 5pm. Visitors will usually get to spend around 3-4 hours on Pulau Payar.

Pulau Payar Packages: Differences and rates

As the name suggests, shore-based package meant that visitors are dropped off at the beach on Pulau Payar and will be based there for the day. There are dedicated make-shift shelters (with tables/chairs) for visitors to use during meal/resting. Basic toilet facilities are available, though there is no freshwater supply on the island.

For the platform-based package, visitors will be based on a floating platform (named Langkawi Coral) which is anchored a short distance off the beach. Note that there is only one platform at the island, so all visitors having the platform-based package (regardless of travel agent) will be based here. Obviously, there are better tables/chairs and toilet facilities on the platform, as compared to those at the beach. However, we’ve read numerous online reviews about overcrowding and bad service on the platform.

For the rates, the platform-based package obviously attract a higher premium.

Price for international visitors*:

• Shore-based: RM160/120 (Adult/Child)
• Platform-based: RM300/200 (Adult/Child)
• Typical price only. Actual price differs across travel agents
• *Malaysians pay a lower rate.

Review: Shore-based vs Platform-based Package

The platform-based package is simply not worth it. Period.

There is only one snorkelling area at Pulau Payar. Thus, both shore and platform-based visitors will snorkel in the same area. The platform is anchored a mere 80m from the beach. Thus, visitors on the shore can easily swim to the vicinity of the platform and enjoy the coral there (not as if there’s any difference in coral from those nearer to shore). Therefore, in terms of snorkelling, there is really no advantage offered by the platform-based package.

As for the facilities, if online reviews of the platform are anything to go by, then it might be better to stay on the beach. Especially when the cost difference between the two packages is huge. Furthermore, isn’t snorkelling the main objective of the trip? In which case, there is no justification to pay extra for the platform. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that we also opted for the shore-based package during our trip.

Review: Overall snorkelling experience at Pulau Payar

During our day-trip to Pulau Payar, the weather, unfortunately, happened to be raining in the morning before clearing up by early afternoon. With less sunlight and slightly choppy conditions (churning up silt), the water isn’t as clear as what we’ve expected it to be.

The corals at Pulau Payar appears to be affected by bleaching and wasn’t as colourful as we’ve wished. There is, however, a relatively good variety and population of marine life at the island. In fact, we managed to see a few baby Black Tip Reef Sharks from the beach!

The maximum depth of the snorkelling area is around 4-6 metres. Thus life-jackets are a must for children and inexperienced swimmers.

To sum it up, we would rate the snorkelling experience at Pulau Payar as average. If you’re only travelling to Langkawi and would like to experience some snorkelling here. Then Pulau Payar is a possible option. However, if you’re on a trip across the region and had already done (or plan to do) snorkelling at more pristine locations (e.g. Kho Lipe, Kho Samui, Tioman). Then we would suggest giving Pulau Payar a pass.

#8: Kilim Karst Geoforest Park

The first geopark in Malaysia and South East Asia. Kilim Karst Geoforest Park takes up the entire north-eastern coastal region of Langkawi Island. The park is popular for its striving mangrove ecosystems and towering limestone karst/caves. Limestone structures here can be traced as far as 500 million years and exhibits similarities to those found in the famed Ha Long Bay (Vietnam).

Other than observing the karst and mangrove structures/ecosystems, popular activities here include fish and eagle feeding. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to explore the park due to time constraint.

How to explore Kilim Karst Geoforest Park

The typical way of exploring the park is to engage the services of private motorboats anchored at Kilim Jetty or Tanjung Rhu (beside Tanjung Rhu beach). The boatman will usually double-up as the guide. Boats are hired based on per hour rates. And visitors will get to select from a list of park attractions (to visit) based on the boat hire duration.

Typical Rates per boat:

• 1 hour: Rm250 per boat
• 2 hour: Rm350 per boat
• 3 hour: Rm450 per boat
• 4 hour: Rm500 per boat

#9: Scarborough Fish and Chips

Scarborough Fish and Chips is one of the most famous eateries on Langkawi. It is located at the northern tip of the island.

In spite of its popularity, the restaurant is simply a small shack by the sea with a couple of tables and an unassuming façade. In fact, it could be easily missed even though its located along the road to Tanjung Rhu Beach and the upmarket Four Seasons Resort.

Though not the cheapest on the island, Scarborough Fish and Chips definitely serves some great and fresh seafood. The simple décor, wonderful sea breeze and top-notch seafood definitely make dining here a great experience. Not to be missed when in Langkawi!

#10: Tengah Beach

On the last day of our trip, we stumbled upon Tengah Beach. Situated after a large outcrop at the southern end of Pantai Cenang, Tengah Beach is approximately 1.5km long and extends southwards.

Less crowd

Tengah Beach is noticeably less crowded and developed than Pantai Cenang. The beach width is narrower (as compared to Pantai Cenang), which might explain for the thinner crowd. And the shoreline is mainly lined with larger beachfront resorts.

The lesser crowd here does translate into some advantages. For one, the atmosphere is more laid-back and thus makes for an ideal place to have a peaceful sunset. Couples looking for a romantic stroll, look no further.

Water sports

Similar to Pantai Cenang, there are water sports operators here. During our visit (close to sunset), several operators were touting their parasailing services. Some were offering discounts (off their listed rates) presuming to bump up revenues before closing for the day.

There is a road further inland that runs parallel to the shoreline. As with the main street in Pantai Cenang, the street is lined with restaurants, retail outlets, hotels and other tourist-related establishments. Though general feel (of the street) is more laid-back compared to Pantai Cenang.

For those that want to avoid the crowds and over-development associated with Pantai Cenang, Tengah Beach is surely a great alternative.
