Taishan Travel Guide: About Taishan (泰山)

Mount Taishan (泰山) is one of China’s Five Great Mountains (五岳) and widely considered the most significant. For over 3,000 years, it has been a site of imperial worship, where emperors performed the Fengshan (封禅) ceremonies to legitimise their rule. It symbolizes heaven, authority, and spiritual balance, and is deeply embedded in Chinese culture, religion, and history.

The mountain rises to 1,545m, with its summit known as the Jade Emperor Peak (玉皇顶). It’s famous for sunrise views, sea of clouds (云海), and ancient stone steps—making it both a historical and scenic destination.

Main Routes to the Summit

There are three primary routes up Taishan, each with a different level of difficulty and experience:

1. Hongmen Route (红门登山路线)

• Start: Hongmen (红门)
• Type: Full hiking route
• Details: Classic route with 6,000+ steps via Zhongtian Gate (中天门) and Nantian Gate (南天门)

My Route: Tianwaicun (天外村) Detailed Guide

This is the route I took—and objectively the most efficient.

Step-by-step

1. Start at Taishan Railway Station (泰安站 / Tai’an Station)
   • ~20 min transport to Tianwaicun (天外村) via public bus or ride-hailing
2. Shuttle Bus (景区大巴)
   • Route: Tianwaicun → Zhongtian Gate (中天门)
   • Duration: ~20 minutes
   • Cost: ~35 RMB (per way)
3. Cable Car (索道)
   • Route: Zhongtian Gate → Nantian Gate (南天门)
   • Duration: ~10 minutes
   • Cost: ~100 RMB (per way)
4. Final Hike
   • Route: Nantian Gate → Jade Emperor Peak (玉皇顶)
   • Duration: ~30 minutes
   • Difficulty: Moderate

Ticketing:

• At Tianwaicun Visitor Centre, only the entrance ticket and uphill bus ticket are available.
• For the downhill bus and cable car rides (both directions), tickets must be purchased separately at the respective bus and cable car stations. No reservations required.

Total Time: ~1.5–2 hours (per way)

Total Cost (return):

• Entrance ticket: 115 RMB

This route allows you to experience Heaven Street (天街) and Nantian Gate (南天门) without a full hike.

Panlong Valley is a more protected mountain valley area with dramatic terrain and quieter scenery. Access here is more controlled and requires shuttle buses.

How to Explore Nalati Xinjiang

Most visitors explore Nalati using the park’s shuttle bus system, as the scenic area is extremely large and each zone has its own shuttle routes.

It is also possible to self-drive in Nalati, especially during less crowded seasons — which is what we did during our visit.

• Of the three areas, self-drive is allowed in Sky Grassland and River Valley Grassland
• Panlong Valley is restricted to private cars and must be visited by shuttle bus
• If you have limited time, we strongly recommend focusing on Sky Grassland, the most impressive and iconic part of Nalati

Most travellers stay in Nalati Town, located right next to the park entrance. The town has plenty of accommodation and food options, making it a convenient base for visiting the grasslands.

Start your visit early so you can take your time. The lake is huge and you will want to stop frequently for photos and short walks.

#2: Drive slowly and stop often

Sayram Lake is not about reaching a single viewpoint — the beauty is spread around the entire loop.

Typical stops include:

• Lakeshore viewpoints
• Snow-mountain backdrops
• Open grasslands and wildflowers (summer)
• Boardwalk areas and pebble beaches

Expect to stop every 10–15 minutes.

#3: Walk down to the lakeshore

Many parking areas allow you to walk right down to the water. This is the best way to experience the lake’s crystal-clear water and peaceful atmosphere.

#4: Enjoy the changing scenery around the loop

The scenery changes continuously as you drive:

• One side shows the vast lake
• The other side reveals grasslands and mountain ranges
• Light and colours shift throughout the day

This constant change is what makes the full loop drive so rewarding.

Sayram Lake is one of the most scenic and relaxing stops in Northern Xinjiang. The loop drive makes it incredibly easy to explore, and the combination of alpine lake, grasslands and snow-capped mountains creates unforgettable scenery. Kanas Xinjiang — China’s Alpine Wonderland & Home of the Tuva People 图瓦人

Located in the far north of Xinjiang near the borders of Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia, Kanas is one of China’s most famous natural destinations and often called “China’s Switzerland.” The region sits within the Altai Mountains and is part of the Xinjiang Kanas National Geopark.

Kanas is especially famous for its turquoise glacial lake, golden autumn forests and misty mornings that look almost unreal. The area is also home to the Tuva people (图瓦人), a small ethnic group with Central Asian roots who live in traditional wooden villages around the lake. Among domestic travellers, Kanas is widely considered one of the top bucket-list destinations in China, particularly during the autumn foliage season.

Understanding the Park Layout & Transport System

Kanas Scenic Area is huge, and understanding the transport system will make your visit much smoother.

Main Entrance at Jiadengyu 贾登峪

The entrance to Xinjiang Kanas National Geopark is located at Jiadengyu (贾登峪), about 30 km from the main visitor centre inside the park.
All visitors must:

• Buy tickets here
• Park their cars here
• Switch to park shuttle buses (all shuttles are free)
• Private vehicles are not allowed inside the park.

Shuttle System Overview

From the entrance, visitors take the shuttle to the main visitor centre, located south of Kanas Lake. This visitor centre acts as the main transport hub — all shuttle routes start and end here.

Facilities available at the visitor centre:

• Food & restaurants
• Basic retail shops
• Lockers & services

There are two accommodation areas inside the park:

• Kanas New Village
• Kanas Old Village

The key attractions you will visit include:

The Famous Three Bays of Kanas

Fairy Bay 神仙湾

Fairy Bay is famous for its dreamy morning mist. Early morning sunlight filtering through the forest creates a magical scene that feels almost surreal.

Moon Bay 月亮湾

Moon Bay is the most iconic viewpoint in Kanas. The river curves into a perfect crescent shape, surrounded by dense forest. This is the classic postcard shot of Kanas.

Dragon Bay 卧龙湾

Named after its dragon-shaped river bend, Dragon Bay offers a wide panoramic view and is usually the first stop when entering the park.

Fish Viewing Tower 观鱼台

The Fish Viewing Tower is the highest viewpoint in the Kanas Scenic Area, sitting at around 2,030 metres above sea level. From the shuttle drop-off point, visitors must climb 1,068 steps, which takes roughly 30–40 minutes depending on your pace. The effort is absolutely worth it — the summit offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Kanas Lake, the surrounding forests and the Altai Mountains. On a clear day, this is easily one of the most spectacular viewpoints in all of Xinjiang.

Kanas Lake 喀纳斯湖

Kanas Lake is the heart of the scenic area and the reason most travellers come here. The lake’s stunning turquoise colour comes from glacial minerals, and the surrounding forests turn golden in autumn. Walking along the lakeshore allows you to experience the changing colours and scenery from different angles.

White Haba Village 白哈巴村

White Haba Village sits near the border with Kazakhstan. Because of its sensitive border location, visitors need to apply for a border permit to visit. As foreign travellers, we chose not to visit due to the extra administrative process and time required.

Final Thoughts

Kanas was one of the biggest highlights of our Northern Xinjiang road trip. Despite the complex shuttle system, the scenery more than makes up for the logistics. With a little planning, visiting Kanas can be a smooth and unforgettable experience.

Jiuzhaigou 九寨沟: A Dreamlike Wonderland in Sichuan

Located in northern Sichuan Province, Jiuzhaigou National Park is one of China’s most iconic natural treasures and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name “Jiuzhaigou” means “Valley of Nine Villages,” referencing the nine Tibetan villages scattered throughout the area.

What makes the park truly special is its otherworldly scenery—vibrant turquoise lakes, multi-level waterfalls, colorful alpine forests, and dramatic mountain peaks. It’s a place where nature feels untouched and magical, attracting millions of visitors each year who come to witness its surreal beauty in every season.

Brief History of Jiuzhaigou Tourism

Jiuzhaigou was officially opened to tourism in the early 1980s, and its reputation quickly grew both within China and internationally. It gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 1992 and was later designated a World Biosphere Reserve in 1997. With the development of tourism infrastructure—including eco-friendly shuttle buses and clearly marked boardwalks—the park has become a model for sustainable tourism in China.

Despite being hit by major earthquakes in 2008 and again in 2017, Jiuzhaigou has bounced back with extensive restoration efforts, and many of its most famous spots are now open to visitors once again.

Jiuzhaigou Guide: Layout and Transport System of the Park

To explore the park efficiently, it’s important to understand its layout and transport system. This guide will help you navigate the park easily and make the most of your visit.

Layout of the Park

Jiuzhaigou is composed of three valleys arranged in a Y shape. The Rize (日则沟) and Zechawa (则查洼沟) valleys (both at higher altitude) make up the right and left forks of the Y, respectively.

These two valleys then meet at the center, forming Shuzheng Valley (树正沟) (bottom of the Y). The main tourist amenity centre of the park sits at this junction (near Nuorilang Waterfall) where the two higher valleys meet.

The main entrance/exit to the park is at the base of the Y, in Shuzheng Valley, which is the lowest altitude point in the park. Visitors arrive here and can either start their journey by heading to the end of Rize or Zechawa Valley, depending on crowd conditions.

• Shuzheng Valley (树正沟): Bottom of the Y

Transportation within the Park

All transport inside Jiuzhaigou is by official park shuttle buses. The park has 55km of road connecting the main sights in the three valleys. Shuttle buses run frequently and stop at key locations throughout the park. In addition to the shuttle buses, there are wooden boardwalks connecting the scenic spots.

Purchasing Tickets and Park Fees

Tickets to Jiuzhaigou National Park must be purchased online in advance, as there are no on-site ticket sales available. All visitors are required to book through the official website or authorized platforms before arrival.

Fees to the park is a combination of the park entry fee and the park shuttle bus fee (which entitle visitors to unlimited use of the park shuttle buses).

Recommended Sequence for Visiting

It’s recommended to start by taking the shuttle bus to the end of Rize or Zechawa Valley (the highest altitudes). From there, make your way back downhill on foot via the boardwalks, enjoying the scenery. If the next site is too far to walk, simply hop on the shuttle bus to continue your journey. This downhill route helps to prevent altitude sickness.

Jiuzhaigou Guide: Rize Valley (日则沟), Jiuzhaigou’s Scenic Gem

Rize Valley (日则沟), the southwestern arm of Jiuzhaigou National Park, stretches approximately 18 kilometers from the Primeval Forest to the Nuorilang Waterfall. Known for its diverse and picturesque landscapes, Rize Valley is often the first choice for visitors exploring the park. Descending from higher elevations, the valley offers the follwing sequence of stunning natural sights.

1. Grass Lake (草海)

A shallow lake adorned with intricate vegetation patterns, Grass Lake is a mosaic of floating grasses and plants. The interplay of flora and water creates a unique tapestry of colors and textures, offering a serene and picturesque setting.

2. Swan Lake (天鹅海)

Measuring 2,250 meters in length and 125 meters in width, Swan Lake is named for the swans and ducks that frequent its waters. Surrounded by dense fir woods and flowering plants, the lake provides a tranquil habitat for migratory birds.

3. Arrow Bamboo Lake (箭竹海)

Covering an area of 170,000 m² at an elevation of 2,618 meters, this shallow lake is encircled by arrow bamboo forests, the favored food of giant pandas. Its serene waters and lush surroundings made it a prominent filming location for the 2002 Chinese film “Hero.”

4. Panda Lake (熊猫海)

Renowned for its striking blue and green hues, Panda Lake is steeped in legend as a former watering spot for giant pandas, though sightings have ceased in recent years. The lake cascades into the multi-tiered Panda Waterfalls, which descend 78 meters in three distinct steps.

5. Five Flower Lake (五花海)

A shallow, multi-colored lake, Five Flower Lake is famed for its crystal-clear waters that reveal a network of ancient fallen tree trunks beneath the surface. The lake’s vibrant colors result from a combination of travertine deposits, algae, and submerged vegetation, making it one of Jiuzhaigou’s most captivating sights.

6. Pearl Shoal (珍珠滩) and Pearl Shoal Waterfall (珍珠滩瀑布)

Pearl Shoal is a gently sloping expanse of active calcareous tufa deposition, over which a thin sheet of water flows, creating a shimmering effect reminiscent of pearls. This shoal leads to the Pearl Shoal Waterfall, where water plunges 28 meters over a 310-meter-wide curtain, forming one of the park’s most iconic waterfalls. Notably, a scene from the television adaptation of “Journey to the West” was filmed here.

7. Mirror Lake (镜海)

As the name suggests, Mirror Lake offers pristine reflections of the surrounding landscapes when its waters are calm. This tranquil lake provides a perfect conclusion to the Rize Valley journey, capturing the essence of Jiuzhaigou’s serene beauty.

Jiuzhaigou Guide: Zechawa Valley (则查洼沟), The Highest of Jiuzhaigou’s Valleys

Zechawa Valley is the southeastern arm of Jiuzhaigou and stretches about 18 km from Nuorilang to Long Lake. At its highest point, it reaches 3,150 meters above sea level—making it the highest valley in the park. Though less varied than Rize, it offers a peaceful route and two standout sights.

1. Long Lake (长海)

Long Lake is Jiuzhaigou’s largest and deepest lake, spanning 7.5 km and plunging 103 meters deep. Sitting at the highest altitude in the park, it’s fed by snowmelt and has no visible outlet, with water seeping underground. Local legends speak of a mysterious lake creature living in its depths.

2. Five-Color Pond (五彩池)

Just downhill from Long Lake, this small but vibrant pond stuns with its brilliant blues and greens. Despite its modest size, it has some of the clearest and most colorful waters in the park. It’s fed by underground water from Long Lake and stays unfrozen even in winter.

Jiuzhaigou Guide: Shuzheng Valley (树正沟), The Heart of Jiuzhaigou

Shuzheng Valley is the main northern branch of Jiuzhaigou, extending 14.5 km from the Y-junction to the park’s entrance. As the most accessible valley, it showcases a series of stunning lakes and waterfalls.

1. Nuorilang Waterfall (诺日朗瀑布)

Located near the valley junction, this 24.5-meter-high, 320-meter-wide waterfall is the widest calcified waterfall in China and a symbol of Jiuzhaigou.

2. Nuorilang Lakes (诺日朗群海) & Shuzheng Lakes (树正群海)

These are stepped series of 18 and 19 ribbon lakes, respectively, formed by glaciers and naturally dammed. Some lakes have folkloric names like Rhinoceros Lake (犀牛海) and Tiger Lake (老虎海).

3. Sleeping Dragon Lake (卧龙海)

This deep blue lake is notable for its visible calcareous dyke running through it, resembling a dragon lying on the bottom.

4. Reed Lake (芦苇海)

A 1,375-meter-long reed-covered marsh with a clear turquoise brook known as the “Jade Ribbon” zigzagging through it. The contrast is particularly striking in autumn when the reeds turn golden yellow.

3 Must-See Places in Lijiang 丽江

We were fortunate to be able to explore Lijiang twice, in Nov-2017 and Sep-2018. Based on our visits, below are the 3 must-see places in Lijiang that you should not miss. Plus, all the travel tips and info that we’ve collected. Enjoy!

#1: Lijiang Old Town 丽江古城

The highlight of any trip to Lijiang must be visiting its beautifully preserved township, Lijiang Old Town.

Lijiang Old Town has a history of more than 800 years. And used to be a strategically important point along the ancient Tea Horse Road; a major tea trading route between China and South Asia. It is widely recognised as one of the best-preserved and most beautiful ancient town in China.

#2: Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡)

A must-see attraction when in Lijiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the deepest gorge (canyon) in the world. With a maximum depth of 3790m. It has a length of about 23km. And its raging river is widely acknowledged as one of the most dramatic, especially during the wet season.

Due to its significant geological and ecological value, Tiger Leaping Gorge (and the surrounding area) had been inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2003.

Where is Tiger Leaping Gorge

The gorge is located along Jinsha River 金沙江. Which is the upper stretch of Yangtze River 长江, the longest river in Asia and third in the world. It is bordered by Jade Dragon Snow Mountain to the east and Haba Snow Mountain to its west.

Administratively, Tiger Leaping Gorge is located along the border of Lijiang and Deqen Prefecture. With Jinsha River separating the two prefectures. The ticketing centre (main entrance; see map) and viewing platforms are all built on the side of Deqen Prefecture.

From the gorge, Lijiang city is 90km (1.5 hours drive) to the south. While the famed Shangri-La, capital of Deqen Prefecture is 110km (2-3 hours drive) to the northwest.

Viewing sections in Tiger Leaping Gorge

Tiger Leaping Gorge is separated into three viewing sections: Upper Gorge, Middle Gorge and Lower Gorge.

The best and most popular/famous viewing section is the Upper Gorge (see map). Which is also the first viewing section after driving past the gorge’s ticketing centre.

Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge (Upper Gorge)

There is a large parking area at Upper Gorge. From the carpark, a series of stairway leads visitors down (descending around 30m*) to a viewing platform that is at the river level.

At 20m wide, the gorge is at its narrowest point here. Resulting in majestic torrents of water plunging thru the river during rainy seasons (May to October).

*Note: The climb back up to the parking area can be tiring (due to the altitude). As of end-2018, the authorities are in the process of building escalators to help visitors overcome this climb.

A tiger once leapt across

A large 13m boulder (a.k.a. Tiger Leaping Rock) rest in the middle of the river at this narrow point. Flanked by sheer cliffs on both sides of the river. Depending on the volume of water, the boulder might be submerged. Especially during the wet season.

It was said that the river was so narrow that a tiger once managed to jump across, via the boulder. Thus the name Tiger Leaping Gorge/Rock.

Getting to Tiger Leaping Gorge

The easiest way (for domestic travellers) to visit the gorge is via self-drive. And most visitors access the gorge as a half-day trip from Lijiang city. The roads (from both Lijiang and Shangri-La) are well paved and the drive is easy.

However, most foreign tourists are not able to drive in China (see our other blog on how foreigners can get a driving license in China). And it is not advisable to take public transport as the bus service only stop at the main road. Which is a considerable distance from both the gorge’s main entrance and main viewing platform (Upper Gorge).

Thus, for foreign visitors, the easiest way is to book a half-day tour with one of the numerous tour agents in Lijiang (or Shangri-La). Else, visitors could try engaging the service of a private car (with driver) and purchase the tickets directly at the gorge’s main entrance.

Top Tip: For those who are already planning to travel from Lijiang to Shangri-La (or vice versa), note that Tiger Leaping Gorge is located along the way if travelling via the old route of G214**. Thus, if you’re booking a private car (with driver) for this journey, ask if the driver is willing to make a brief stop at Tiger Leaping Gorge. This will save you the time and cost of engaging a separate tour to visit the gorge.

**As of mid-2019, there appears to be a new XiangLi Highway linking Lijiang and Shangri-La. This new highway will bypass Tiger Leaping Gorge. However, you could still check if your driver is willing to use G214 instead.

Other visitor information (Tiger Leaping Gorge)

• Gorge entry fee: RMB 65/32.50 (Adult/Child)
• Altitude of Upper Gorge viewing platform/carpark: Approximately 1800m
• When to visit: Try to visit Tiger Leaping Gorge during the wet season of May to October. The river swells to frightening levels during this period and is at its most impressive form.

#3: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (YuLong Snow Mountain) 玉龙雪山

With a peak of 5596m, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is the southern-most permanent snow-capped mountain range in the Northern Hemisphere. The mountain is a short 30 minutes’ drive north of Lijiang Old Town. And is a sacred mountain for the local Naxi minority ethnic group.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is famed for its stunning white peaks protruding from a sea of clouds. It boasts one of the highest cable car service in China. And its Peak Viewing Platform (at 4680m in Glacier Park) is one of the highest observation platforms in the world. Little wonder the mountain is extremely popular with both foreign and domestic visitors.

Other side attractions within the mountain range include Blue Moon Valley, Spruce Meadow and Yak Meadow. With both Spruce and Yak Meadow accessible only by their respective cable car service.

Visiting Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

The trip to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is normally done as a full-day trip from Lijiang city.

All visitors entering the mountain are required to pay mountain entry fees. This is in addition to the various cable car/attraction bus fees for the individual attractions within the mountain. (Refer to the end of this section for the respective fees)

Mountain entry fee: RMB 130/65 (Adult/Child). Payable to all entering Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Visitors to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain will enter via the mountain’s main visitor centre. The visitor centre contains the ticketing booths and amenities such as restaurants/cafes, retail shops and winter-jacket rental outlets.

At the visitor centre, travellers will need to transfer to attraction buses (shuttle bus services) to get to the various attractions. No outside vehicles are allowed in the mountain beyond the visitor centre.

Many travel agents in Lijiang city offers guided day-tour packages for the mountain. These packages typically include the fees for transport (to/from the mountain), mountain entry, cable car, attraction bus, buffet lunch and winter-jacket rental. The buffet lunch and winter-jacket rental outlets are located in/adjacent to the visitor centre.

Attractions in Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

The following are the various attractions within Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. (Refer to the end of this section for the respective fees)

#1: Glacier Park (4506m)

The undisputed main attraction in the mountain range. Glacier Park is situated near the peak of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. And is only accessible via cable car, which is one of the highest in China. Glacier Park offers close-up and stunning views of the mountain’s glaciers and peaks.

From its base station (3356m), the cable car service sends visitors up to Glacier Park (Upper Station, 4506m). On clear days, visitors will be awed by the panoramic views of the peaks from Glacier Park.

Peak Viewing Platform (4680m)

From Glacier Park’s Upper Station, wooden stairways allow visitors to hike up to the Peak Viewing Platform (4680m). This platform is the highest point accessible to visitors within Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Though the climbing distance is short, it can be physically demanding and time-consuming due to the high altitude. It is very common for visitors to experience shortness of breath and fatigue (i.e. altitude sickness) from this short climb. Visitors should exercise caution and turn back if feeling unwell.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Peak Platform (4680m)

Oxygen canisters

To provide temporary relief to the symptoms of altitude sickness, visitors to Glacier Park are usually advised to bring along oxygen canisters. These are widely available for purchase in Lijiang city and at the mountain.

Though these Chinese-made canisters are usually marked “oxygen canisters”, we suspect them to be nothing more than compressed air. Having said, even compressed air might help (to a certain extent) when one is experiencing altitude sickness while at Glacier Park. Thus, we do recommend bringing them along.

Tip for buying oxygen canister: As to be expected, the retail price of oxygen canisters get insanely higher at the mountain. It is way cheaper to get them at Lijiang city. Try to purchase them at the minimarts on the edge of Lijiang Old Town. A large canister normally retails for RMB 10 at these locations.

Important tips for visiting Glacier Park

• The queue for Glacier Park’s cable car can get ridiculously long especially during holidays/weekends. Avoid these periods if possible.
• Do not venture outside the wooden platforms/stairways while at Glacier Park. It is extremely dangerous to walk on snow/glacier without any proper gear/guidance.
• Avoid renting winter clothing at the mountain. Bring your own jacket/gloves. You will need it.

• Upper Cable Car Station: 4506m
• Peak viewing platform: 4680m

#2: Blue Moon Valley (2830m)

The second most visited attraction within Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Blue Moon Valley is situated at an altitude of around 2830m. And is a short shuttle bus ride north of the main visitor centre. The valley is the only attraction within the mountain that doesn’t require cable car access.

Features at Blue Moon Valley

Blue Moon Valley is made up of the following features:

#1: White Water Terrace (not to be confused with the White Water Terrace in neighbouring Shangri-La)

#2: Jade-Like Wine Lake (YuYe Lake)

#3: Mirror Lake (JingTan Lake)

#4: Blue Moon Lake (LanYue Lake)

#5: Wave-Listening Lake (Tingtao Lake)

The lakes (#2-#5) are all situated sequentially and directly downstream from White Water Terrace.

Man-made scenery

At first glance, the scenery in Blue Moon Valley is truly impressive. With the lakes and White Water Terrace forming an exquisite series of waterways and cascades. Many domestic visitors spend lengthy periods here taking pictures of the stunning features.

However, most of the features in Blue Moon Valley are man-made. Indeed, with a closer inspection of the lake bottoms and cascades, one could see signs of landscaping works.

The partially man-made White Water Terrace was the first to be opened to tourist more than a decade ago. And the rest of the lakes were constructed in more recent years.

Having said, Blue Moon Valley does warrant a brief visit not least for its peaceful setting and free entrance.

Note: The Blue Moon Valley here should not be confused with another valley by the same name in neighbouring Shangri-La.

#3: Spruce Meadow and Yak Meadow

Both Spruce Meadow (3240m) and Yak Meadow (3650m) are open grasslands which are only accessible via their respective cable car services. Spruce Meadow got its name from the lofty spruces surrounding the grassland. While Yak Meadow has its name from the yaks grazing on the fields. Both meadows are relatively further from the main visitor centre and thus receives fewer visitors.

The last we visited both meadows were more than a decade ago, when the mountain was less developed. However, we didn’t have much deep impression of them back then. Thus, we decided on give them a pass on our more recent Nov-2017 trip. And judging by what we read online, we aren’t missing much either.

Other visitor information (including fees) (Jade Dragon Snow Mountain)

The mountain’s main visitor centre (ticketing centre) is a short 30 minutes’ drive north of Lijiang Old Town.

Mountain entry fees

RMB 130/65 (Adult/Child). Payable to all entering Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. This fee is separate from other fees listed below.

Glacier Park fees

Cable Car: RMB 180/90 (Adult/Child) for round trip

Attraction bus: RMB 20 (round trip)

Blue Moon Lake fees

(No entrance fee)

Attraction bus: RMB 20 (round trip)

Spruce Meadow fees

Cable Car: RMB 55 (Adult) for round trip

Attraction bus: RMB 20 (round trip)

How to get to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

There are regular bus services from Lijiang Old Town to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain’s visitor centre. Else taxis are available for this short journey (30 minutes’ drive).

Lijiang Old Town Travel Guide

We were fortunate to be able to explore Lijiang Old Town twice, in Nov-2017 and Sep-2018. The following are what we’re gathered from our trips, plus some important travel tips.

Introduction: Lijiang Old Town, 丽江古城

Lijiang Old Town, also known as Dayan Old Town (大研镇), had its roots from the late Song (960 – 1279) and early Yuan (1271 – 1368) dynasties. The town rose to prominence in ancient China due to its strategic location along the Ancient Tea Horse Road. A major tea trading route linking China and South Asia.

The region is home to the Naxi people, who practise the Dongba culture and religion. Sadly though, most of the Naxi people had moved out of the old town in recent years. Mainly due to its commercialization and high cost of living.

Cobblestone streets and stone bridges

As with many ancient towns, Lijiang Old Town features wide cobblestone streets and archaic stone bridges. While its novel water system bears proof to Lijiang’s status as a crucial city during its heydays.

The Square Market (Sifang Square) is the social and geographical centre of town. From here, a few major streets branch out. Including Xinhua Street, DongDa Street, Guangyi Street, QiYi Street and WuYi Street.

Due to its myriad of narrow and twisting cobblestone alleys, Lijiang Old Town is out of bound to vehicles. It takes about 20 minutes to walk from one end of the old town to the other.

Elevation of 2400m

Lijiang city is at an elevation of 2400m. Most visitors do not feel any major signs of altitude sickness while in the city (i.e. old town).

However, altitude sickness often set in during trips to YuLong Snow Mountain. While many visitors also experience shortness of breath while climbing stairs at Tiger Leaping Gorge.

Orderliness and Cleanliness

Lijiang Old Town is a major destination for both local and foreign tourist. Thus, the Chinese government is particularly cautious about maintaining its security and cleanliness.

The police presence in Lijiang is heavy and obvious. Police squads can frequently be seen patrolling the old town. Ensuring Lijiang is a generally safe place.

Even the taxis in Lijiang city are heavily monitored. We were assured by our hotel host that taxi drivers (at least those plying near the old town) generally charge by meters and does not try to rip off tourist.

The authorities had also done a good job in ensuring Liijang Old Town’s cleanliness. The streets are largely well kept. While the public toilets within the old town are amongst the cleanest you’ll find at any Chinese tourist attractions.

How many days to plan for Lijiang City

Lijiang is a relatively small city. As a tourist destination, there are only a few essential attractions to visit in the area. Including:

#1, Lijiang Old Town: Due to convenience, this is where most visitors will stay during their visit to Lijiang.

#2, YuLong Snow Mountain*: The southern-most permanent snow-capped mountain in the northern hemisphere. The base of the mountain (where visitors take the cable car to the peak) is a 30 minutes’ drive north of Lijiang Old Town.

#3, Tiger Leaping Gorge*: One of the deepest gorge in the world with spectacular flow especially during the wet season. Tiger Leaping Gorge is situated on the border between Lijiang and Shangri-La county. With its viewing platform on the side of Shangri-La county. The viewing platform is much closer to Lijiang (1.5 hours’ drive) than to Shangri-La (3 hours’ drive).

Most visitors would only need around 3 days to cover the above. Thus, many visitors to Lijiang typically bundle their trips with visits to other nearby destinations.

Other major tourist destinations in the region

The closest major tourist destinations (to Lijiang city) are Lugu lake (northeast, 4.5 hours’ drive, 210km), Shangri-La (northwest, 2.5 hours’ drive, 170km) and Dali (south, 2.5 hours’ drive, 180km).

How to get from Lijiang Airport to Old Town

Lijiang has a small airport which mostly serves domestic routes. Lijiang Sanyi International Airport (LJG) is 28km (30 minutes’ drive) south of the city. The most popular transport modes between the airport and old town are airport bus, private car (~RMB 80/car) and regular taxi (~RMB 80/car).

Airport Bus

The Airport Bus cost RMB 20/pax. Journey approximately 30 minutes. Pay directly to the driver on the bus (receipt will be issued). Departure should be every 30 minutes or so.

Note that the airport bus does not stop at the old town. Instead, its terminal station (in the city) is at the rear of Blue Sky Hotel. Which is a 10 minutes’ walk from the northern end (i.e. Waterwheel) of Lijiang Old Town.

However, depending on which part of the old town you’re staying, you might need to take a taxi from Blue Sky Hotel. Local taxis are coloured green (NOT BLUE). Base fare starts from RMB 8. For example, if you’re heading to the old town’s South Gate the fare is RMB 16 and takes 10-15 minutes.

Lijiang Airport to Lijiang Old Town

For this trip, it is best to book a transport (private car, RMB 80/car, 30 minutes) with your hotel. Given that the cost of a private car is relatively cheap (especially if shared), and that you’ve just landed from a flight, it would be easiest to just engage a private car.

In addition, your driver will help you to call the hotel upon arrival at the old town’s entrance. Ensuring that the hotel staff will be around to help with your luggage and guide you to it.

Lijiang Old Town to Lijiang Airport

Again, if there is 2 or more pax, it might be worthwhile to just book a private car with your hotel. Else, if you’re alone and on a budget, consider the airport bus. Especially if you’re staying at the northern parts of Lijiang Old Town.

Lijiang Old Town Preservation Fee (?)

There is often much confusion on whether there is a requirement to pay for entry into Lijiang Old Town.

On most websites, this fee (RMB 80) is often termed as “preservation fee”, “maintenance fee” or even “protection fee”. However, not all visitors reported paying or even knowing about the presence of such fees.

Interestingly, in the official tourist map/brochure that we personally obtained from information booths within the old town, it is stated that the “maintenance fee” is “80 yuan per person per time”.

However, based on our visit to Lijiang Old Town in Nov-2017 and Sep-2018, we never had to pay any fee. We had never seen any booth collecting the fee. And no one had ever inquired if we had paid it. In fact, we even spoke to the manager of a hotel in the old town and was told that the fee was “abolished” (for reasons that we shall not state in this blog).

Where to stay in Lijiang

For convenience, most visitors choose to stay within the old town, or along its fringes.

There are a good number of small and tastefully renovated boutique hotels, both within and along the outskirts of the old town. Naturally, visitors should expect to pay slightly more and have smaller rooms for hotels situated within the old town. Having said, the average room pricing in the area is reasonable and good deals can often be snagged, especially if booked early.

Xilu Xiaoxie Inn

During our Sep-2018 trip, we stayed at Xilu Xiaoxie Inn**. Which is one of the most highly rated hotels (on Booking.com) within Lijiang Old Town.

The inn is conveniently located along QiYi Street. Making it a short walk from The Square Market. And is a 5 minutes’ walk from the South Gate (Nanmen Street).

As with many hotels in Lijiang Old Town, the staff will usually meet you at one of the town entrances (e.g. gates) upon your arrival. And walk you in so that you’ll not get lost in the maze of alleys.

Similar to most boutique hotels within the old town, Xilu Xiaoxie Inn is a relatively small property. The rooms, though small, are tastefully done up, clean and in excellent condition. Some rooms even have a loft with double bed.

The staffs are extremely courteous, friendly and helpful. And the hotel manager is able to communicate well in English (but not the rest of the junior staffs).

The hotel is situated near a school. Which have a number of small eateries serving cheap and good local breakfast from as early as 6am.

Sights in Lijiang Old Town

Photography Tips

Unsurprisingly, most of the more scenic spots are away from the main tourist-infested areas (e.g. The Square Market and northern part of town).

The best time to capture stunning images is usually the golden hour just before sunset. When the sky takes on a golden hue and the alleys are starting to get lited up in a sea of tungsten yellow.

Evenings are also another great time to get some lovely images. As the old town’s lighting explodes into a full bloom of contrasting colours. Though the tourist crowd at this time might clutter your shots. Tripods are essential during the evenings.

Our favourite photography spots

We especially love the stream (Middle River) running parallel to QiYi Street. Due to its location off the main streets, this area along the stream tends to receive fewer visitors. There are a number of peaceful and lovely spots here. Especially suitable for lovebirds, photography buffs and those looking for a crack Instagram shot.

Panoramic photo of Lijiang Old Town

Go to Lion Hill to take a panoramic photo of the entire old town. Numerous cafes/restaurants on Lion Hill have upper levels that provide sweeping views of Lijiang Old Town.

Most of them are ok for visitors to take a quick photo. However, they do require some form of purchase if you’re using the seats and/or need more time for your photo taking. Which is absolutely reasonable given that they have a business to run.

Lugu Lake (泸沽湖) is a breathtaking alpine lake located in a mountainous region on the border of China’s Yunnan (云南) and Sichuan (四川) province. With an elevation of approximately 2690 metres, Lugu Lake is the highest lake in Yunnan and is surrounded by dramatic mountains. Due to its remoteness, foreign visitors seldom get to explore this part of Yunnan/Sichuan. However, domestic travellers in the region had long known Lugu Lake’s beauty. VLOG of our Nov-2017 Lugu Lake trip

Lugu Lake Travel Guide (泸沽湖)

This Lugu Lake Travel Guide is based on our 3-days visit in Nov-2017. We rented a car in Chengdu (Sichuan) and drove 700km (slightly more than a day) to Lugu Lake. After exploring the lake, we drove (see time-lapse video) to Lijiang (Yunnan). And finally ending our trip by looping back to Chengdu with 2200km under our belt.

Lugu Lake Intro

Located on the provincial border of Yunnan/Sichuan, Lugu Lake is administratively 1/3 under Yunnan and 2/3 under Sichuan province. Interestingly, if one is observant enough, the sibling rivalry between the two (in claiming Lugu Lake as its own) can be seen in certain instances.

Mountains fence Lugu Lake on all sides. Most prominent of which is Mount Goddess Gemu (3754m) off its northern shore. Lugu Lake has five islands. And attained its famed beauty from the numerous breathtaking peninsulas, bays and beaches that ringed it. The maximum depth of the lake is 93m, with an average of 40m.

Home of the Mosuo Tribe

Lugu Lake is home to the Mosuo Tribe (摩梭). A small ethnic group of around 40,000, the Mosuo people had resided in this mountainous region between Yunnan/Sichuan for generations.

The Mosuo Tribe is widely recognized as the last matriarchal society in the world. Thus earning them (and Lugu Lake) references such as “The Kingdom of Women” (女儿国) and “Home of the Matriarchal Tribe”.

Being matriarchal, the Mosuo society and families are headed by women. The women have absolute ownership of family properties and their children. The family lineage is also continued via the female line.

Walking Marriage

The most unique aspect of the Mosuo culture is their practice of “walking marriage”.

In a walking marriage, couples do not get into a formal marriage or relationship. Rather, the women have the rights to select and change their partners. During the day, the women and their partners would stay with their respective (maternal) families. During the night, the women would give permission for the partner to visit and stay till sunrise.

As such, both sides officially belong to separate households. And have no formal relationships nor shared properties. Children born from a walking marriage are raised by the women and carry the mother family name.

Accessing Lugu Lake

The mountainous nature of the region makes access to Lugu Lake difficult. It was not until 1982 that the lake was served by proper roads. Since then, tourism had taken a boom in the area. And the region’s infrastructure, including its road network and tourism related services had improved greatly. (As a side note, we’re sad to feedback that the general cleanliness of the public toilets in the area still have major rooms for improvement.)

Entry points to Lugu Lake

There are two main routes (entry points) to Lugu Lake, one in the east and the other in the south.

The eastern entrance is under the jurisdiction of Sichuan province, and links directly to the city of Xichang (248km). The southern entrance is under the care of Yunnan province and is 220km from the nearest Yunnan city of Lijiang. Both entrances (provinces) have their respective visitor centre and ticketing booths. Visitors are required to purchase tickets before entry into Lugu Lake.

Lugu Lake entry fees: RMB 100/50 (Adult/Child). Per entry with no restriction on duration of stay.

Driving around Lugu Lake

There is a road running along the shoreline of Lugu Lake, except for some parts in its eastern section. This scenic drive looping Lugu Lake is 50km long. And much of it is tagged under the provincial highway number S307.

Without doubt, the best and most convenient way to explore Lugu Lake is via self-driving. And it is usually possible to explore the entire lake (in relative detail) in around 2-3 days.

Having said, it is not commonly possible for foreigners to drive in China. Because the Chinese government does not recognize foreign driving licenses. To know more about the complex procedure of how foreigners can get a driving license in China, refer to our other blog.

For those whom are not able to drive in China, the next best alternative would be to hire a car with driver to explore the lake. As usual, accommodation receptions are usually able to provide their guest with the relevant contacts for such services.

Best time to visit Lugu Lake

Lugu Lake’s beauty can be appreciated year-round, with each season offering its unique sights and characteristics. However, it is best to avoid the rainy season which extends from June to August. The optimal period is usually spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Its autumn views are especially stunning, with golden leaves set against the backdrop of an expansive lake.

Scenic spots around Lugu Lake

In this section, we have organized Lugu Lake into different areas of interest (marked A to J as listed below). The areas are sequenced counter-clockwise around the lake, same as the manner in which we explored Lugu Lake during our trip. All the scenic spots are tagged (in the same sequence) in our Google Map below.

Each of the areas will be illustrated via the relevant photographs we had taken at the location. Thus, you can decide which are the scenic spots that you wouldn’t want to miss on your trip!

Note: Google road maps of China has some misalignment. If one looks at the satellite images overlaid with road maps, the misalignment between the two can be seen. Always base your navigation on the satellite images (i.e. use satellite image as reference) instead of the road map. This problem is common knowledge and is due to Chinese government security restrictions.

#A2: Visiting Marriage Bridge 走婚桥

This is a popular dating spot for Mosuo people, thus its name. There is a small jetty near bridge that offer boat tours of Caohai.

#A3: Visiting Marriage Bridge Viewing Point

This viewing point is located at the top of a small hill at the southern end of the bridge. Simply walk to the southern end of the bridge and cross the road. From here, there is a flight of stairs leading up to the viewing point. The climb up is short and easy. However, the view at the top is excellent. Surely the best viewpoint to photograph the bridge and Caohai.

#A4: Caohai 草海

Caohai translate into “sea of grass”. It refers to the enormous patch of submerged lake weeds on the eastern section of Lugu Lake. The Visiting Marriage Bridge was built to span this area of submerged lake weeds.

#B1: Luowa Peninsula 洛洼半岛

Located at the end of the road from Lamasery and Visiting Marriage Bridge. Luowa Pier is located here and offers boat trips to the nearby islands and bays. There is a trail from here to Goddess Bay (Area#C).

Commonly thought to be the best sunset viewing point in Lugu Lake. Parking is limited.

#F1: Lige Viewing Point#1 里格

Main viewing point for Lige village and Lige Peninsula.

Alternative viewing point for Lige village and Lige Peninsula.

Located on the foot of a hill and by the shoreline, Lige village is certainly one of the most scenic village in Lugu Lake. A short walk from the village is Lige Peninsula. The peninsula is the most photographed spot in Lugu Lake. The best spots to photograph Lige village and its peninsula are the viewing points F1/F2 above. Lige village have a number of eateries, and can be a good place for meal breaks.

Area G/H/I

#G: Yunnan Lover’s Beach 情人滩

This is the Lover’s Beach on the side of Yunnan. It is extremely popular with Chinese tour groups that arrive by the busloads. The main attraction is apparently a couple of average-looking trees that are by the beach.

In our opinion, this place is grossly over-rated and should be skipped. With throngs of domestic tourist jostling for photo shoots in such a small and mediocre beach, you’re better off giving it a pass. There are tons of spots around Lugu Lake that are way more scenic than this.

Last but not least, this is the only spot in Lugu Lake that we have to pay for parking. The carpark is essentially an open space with no marking whatsoever. However, this didn’t stop touts from demanding a RMB 10 payment.

Area J

#J1: Viewing point near Yunnan Visitor Centre

This is not an official viewing point. It is a piece of empty land beside the road that appears to be a previous construction site. Great place to have an elevated view of Lugu Lake.

#J2: Roadside viewing point next to Yunnan Visitor Centre

As of our visit in Nov-2017, the official viewing platform at Yunnan Visitor Centre is under construction. Thus, most visitors end up stopping by the side of the road (next to the visitor centre) to take pictures of the lake. Of the two viewing points (J1/J2), J1 definitely have the better view of Lugu Lake.

How to get to Lugu Lake

Visitors to Lugu Lake typically arrive through Lijiang (Yunnan) or Xichang (Sichuan).

From Lijiang (Yunnan):

Lijiang is 220km southwest of Lugu Lake. It is the most direct way of accessing Lugu Lake. The road from Lijiang to Lugu Lake is well paved, though it is winding in most parts. If self-driving, the journey would typically take 4 hours. There are daily bus services between Lijiang and Lugu Lake. This journey takes between 5-7 hours and cost around RMB 66-80.

Lijiang itself is well-connected by bus to regional destinations like DaLi (大理) and Shangri-La (香格里拉). And is connected to Kunming 昆明 (the capital city of Yunnan province) by bus/train/flights.

From Xichang (Sichuan):

For those from Sichuan, the entry to Lugu Lake is via Xichang which is about 250km away. Similar to the road between Lijiang/Lugu Lake, the route between Xichang and Lugu Lake is well paved and winding at most parts. If self-driving, the journey would typically take 4-5 hours. Daily bus services ply this route and the journey would typically take 7-8 hours.

Xichang is in turn well-connected to Chengdu 成都 (the capital city of Sichuan province) by bus and regular train.

Introduction to Xi’an 西安

Xi’an is the capital city of Shaanxi Province (陕西省), China. It is the most populous city in the region of northwest China. The Chinese name Xi’an (西安) translates into “Western Peace”.

One of the oldest cities in China, Xi’an is centrally located at the convergence of several major ancient routes linking neighboring provinces. It is also the eastern terminal point of the famed trading route, the Silk Road.

Due to its strategic geographical location and the presence of natural defense elements, Xi’an had been the capital of numerous Chinese dynasties since ancient times. As a testament to Xi’an’s significance, the city is the oldest of China’s Four Great Ancient Capitals.

A short distance east of Xi’an city (~30km) is the site of the world-famous Terracotta Army. Which was built under the orders of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of unified China.

Chang’an 长安

Over its long history, the area around the present Xi’an city was known by many other names. The most prominent of which was Chang’an (长安), which translates into “Perpetual Peace”. The region of Chang’an had been designated as a capital city as early as 200 BC. And for a period of time, Chang’an was the largest city in the world. With more than a million inhabitants at its peak.

The name of Xi’an was only introduced in 1369 at the start of the Ming Dynasty. And the name remained so for most periods since.

Xi’an Attractions – That You Should Not Miss

Below is the list Xi’an attraction within (or in the vicinity of) the ancient city that we find interesting. Listed in random order.

Xi’an Attractions #1: Xi’an City Wall 西安城墙

The city wall of Xi’an is one of the largest, oldest and best surviving city walls in China. As the most prominent structure visitors would see when entering the city, the city wall is one of the most popular and famed attractions of Xi’an. Such is its cultural importance; Xi’an City Wall is listed as an UNESCO World Heritage site.

Original Xi’an City Wall

Over the centuries, Xi’an city wall had undergone a number of rebuilding. Construction of the original city wall (then Chang’an) started in 194 BC, under the orders of Emperor Gaozu, the founding emperor of the Han dynasty. At its completion, the original city wall had a length of 25.7km and confined an area of 36km².

However, Chang’an (and its city wall) would be ravaged by 904, near the end of the Tang dynasty. The imperial court of Tang dynasty was then moved to Luoyang, where it serves out its short remainder.

New Xi’an City Wall

The current Xi’an city wall had its origin from the Ming dynasty. In 1370, Hongwu Emperor (Zhu Yuanzhang), the founding emperor of Ming dynasty, initiated the construction of a new city wall in Xi’an.

The rectangular shaped Xi’an city wall would have a perimeter of 14km, enclosing an area of 12km². Which is much smaller than preceding walls. The city wall is 12m high and has a top width of around 12m-14m.

This generous width meant that there is a wide walkway at the top of the city wall, along its entire perimeter. It is this spacious walkway that allows modern visitors to cycle along its perimeter. An activity that has evolved to be mandatory for all visitors to the wall.

Defensive features of Xi’an City Wall

As a defensive complex, Xi’an city wall encompass drawbridges, guard/observation towers and multi-tiered gates. A wide moat also runs parallel to its entire perimeter. Ramparts that juts out from the wall are strategically positioned every 120m, so that archers could shoot at invaders trying to climb/breach the wall.

Gates of Xi’an City Wall

The access into the enclosed city is via four major gates at each side of the wall. Namely:

• South Gate: YongNing Gate 永宁门 (translates into eternal peace)
• North Gate: AnYuan Gate 安远门 (translates into forever harmony)
• West Gate: AnDing Gate 安定门 (translates into harmony peace)
• East Gate: ChangLe Gate 长乐门 (translates into eternal joy)

Exploring Xi’an City Wall

Visitors could choose to visit the city wall via entering at any of the four gates. (See subsequent sections for fee and opening hours)

However, the South Gate (YongNing Gate) is widely acknowledged as the most charming of the four. In addition, the South Gate happens to be the nearest gate to the rest of the notable attractions within Xi’an city (see subsequent sections). Thus, most visitors to Xi’an city wall would do so via entering at the South Gate.

Unsurprisingly, South Gate has the most tourist amenities and is normally the site of most events held on the city wall.

Travel/Photography Tips:

• The South Gate is conveniently located next to the Xi’an metro station by the same name; YongNingMen (YongNing Gate, Xi’an Metro Line 2). Note that the metro entrance is on the outside of the city wall.

• Xi’an city wall is beautifully lit up every evening. For best views, get outside the city wall and walk along the outside of the moat at South Gate. Camera tripod essential.

Getting around the top Xi’an City Wall

As Xi’an city wall has a perimeter of 14km, it could take between 3-4 hours to cover the entire loop on foot. For those looking for a speedier way to cover the distance, there is the option of renting bicycles or taking the less-strenuous electric sightseeing car.

As interesting as it may sound, the top of the city wall is wide enough to accommodate cycling and electric buggies ferrying visitors around. In fact, cycling on Xi’an city wall is considered one of the must-do activities for anyone visiting the city.

Bicycles and sightseeing buggies

Bicycle rental services are conveniently located on the top of the wall, at each of the four gates and certain sections in-between. Hirers could rent at one outlet and return at any outlets they choose to, at no extra cost. Meaning hirers could collect his/her bike at a particular gate, then cycle to another gate and return the bicycle there. (See subsequent sections for fee and operating hours)

For those wanting a more leisure way of exploring the wall, regular electric sightseeing cars (buggies) ply the entire perimeter of the city wall. Stopping at each of the four gates to allow for embarkation/disembarkation. (See subsequent sections for fee and operating hours)

Xi’an City Wall admission fees and other costs

Normal rates: RMB 54 (adult), RMB 27 (child)

*We went a few weeks after Chinese New Year (2018) while there was a lantern exhibition on the wall. The admission fee then was RMB 60 (adult), RMB 30 (child).

Bicycle Rental

• Single bike: RMB 45 for 3 hours (RMB 5 for every extra 10minutes of rental)
• Tandem bike: RMB 90 for 3 hours (RMB 10 for every extra 10minutes of rental)

*Note: Bicycles can be rented and returned at all gates. However, riders need to take note of the rental closing time of each gate. (i.e. after 8pm, only the bicycle rental outlet at South Gate is open to receive bike returns)

Electric Sightseeing Car

• Full perimeter journey: RMB 120/pax
• Per stop/gate: RMB 30/pax
• Stops: South Gate | West Gate | North Gate | East Gate
• Total Distance: 13.74km

Operation time for bicycle rental and electric sightseeing car

• South Gate: 8am to 10pm
• All other gates: 8am to 8pm

Xi’an Attractions #2: Xi’an Bell Tower 钟楼

In ancient China, authorities typically build bell towers in major cities for the purpose of reporting time and as the focal point for announcing news to commoners. It is for the same reason that Hongwu Emperor (Zhu Yuanzhang) of Ming Dynasty initiated the construction of Xi’an Bell Tower in 1384.

The site of the original Xi’an Bell Tower is 1km away from the present location. It was only in 1582 that Wanli Emperor (Zhu Yijun) of Ming dynasty moved the tower to its present location.

Majestic Bell Tower

Unsurprisingly, Xi’an Bell Tower has a huge bell that was used to announce the time. The tower itself is of typical Ming dynasty architecture styles. And stands an imposing height of 36m at the junction of 4 major streets.

Over the centuries, Xi’an Bell Tower has grown to become a symbol of Xi’an city. And is widely considered to be the grandest and most well preserved ancient bell tower in China. (allow 30 minutes to 1 hour for visit)

Opening time: 8.30am to 8.30pm (last ticket sale at 8pm)

Off-Peak Season: 26-Oct to 25-March

Xi’an Attractions #3: Xi’an Drum Tower 鼓楼

A mere 5 minutes’ walk (heading west) from Bell Tower would bring you to Xi’an Drum Tower.

Xi’an Drum Tower got its name from the large drum placed within the tower. Considered the “twin sister” of Bell Tower, the Xi’an Drum Tower was built slightly earlier in 1380. And was similarly done under the orders of Hongwu Emperor, Ming dynasty. It has a height of 34m.

In ancient times, both the Bell Tower and Drum Tower worked together to give the city’s residents indication of time. The Bell Tower would have its bell struck at daybreak, while the Drum Tower would beat its drum at sunset.

24 Solar Term Drums

Visitors to the 1st floor of Xi’an Drum Tower would find a set of 24 drums positioned on the north and south sides. These 24 drums represent the 24 solar terms of China’s ancient lunisolar calendar. The lunisolar calendar was created to guide farming practices and is based on the relationship between the sun, moon and earth.

Xi’an Attractions #4: Xi’an Muslim Quarter 回民街

As the eastern terminal point of the Silk Road, Xi’an receives foreign traders/visitors from the Middle East (and beyond) since as early as Han dynasty (around 200 BC).

With the growing trade from Middle East, an increasing number of visiting Muslims from Persia and Arab countries started to settle in Xi’an. And most of these early Muslim settlers converge in the area known as Muslim Quarter (or Huimin Street) within Xi’an city.

Over the centuries, the descendants of these early Muslim settlers continue to reside within Xi’an Muslim Quarter. Making it the hub of the Muslim populace in Xi’an city.

Geographically, Xi’an Muslim Quarter is a cluster of neighboring streets located directly north of Xi’an Drum Tower. There are a number of mosques within the Muslim Quarter to serve these residents.

Your ultimate food street

The streets of Xi’an Muslim Quarter have, over the years, developed into a heaven of food tasting and retail therapy.

With its endless row of uniquely local food and snacks, Xi’an Muslim Quarter has gotten a reputation to be the pinnacle of all food streets. It is the go-to location for both locals and foreign visitors looking for a gastronomic experience.

Such is its reputation, Xi’an Muslim Quarter is perpetually crowded regardless your time of visit. With the crowd getting heavier by evenings. It is easily the most crowded place in Xi’an at night.

Xi’an Attractions #5: Giant Wild Goose Pagoda 大雁塔

Of the Xi’an attractions mentioned in this post, only Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is located outside Xi’an city wall. The pagoda is situated within the Daci’en Temple complex, which is 5-6km south of Xi’an city wall’s South Gate.

Xuanzang’s Journey to the West

Giant Wild Goose Pagoda was constructed in 652 AD during the Tang dynasty. The original pagoda had five levels. It was built to store the Buddhist scriptures that was brought back from India by the famed Buddhist monk Xuanzang.

Xuanzang had left Xi’an (then Chang’an) in 629 to embark on an epic overland pilgrimage to India to obtain Buddhist Sanskrit scriptures. The arduous round journey took 16 years. And Xuanzang would return to Xi’an in 645 with 657 Sanskrit scriptures.

Xuanzang’s legendary journey to India would be used as the basis of a Chinese classic novel written close to a thousand years later. The famed novel “Journey to the West” would went on to be one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature.

Rebuilding efforts and subsequent damages

The prominent empress, Wu Zetian, would order the rebuilding of Giant Wild Goose Pagoda in 704. Upgrading it into a ten-level structure.

Unfortunately, a huge earthquake caused substantial damage to the pagoda in 1556. Reducing it to seven-levels at a height of 64m, which the pagoda had remained since.

Visiting Giant Wild Goose Pagoda

Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is easily accessible via Xi’an Metro Line 3. It is located next to the Xi’an metro station by the same name; Giant Wild Goose Pagoda (or DaYanTa).

The exit of the Metro station would lead one to the north end of Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, where there is a huge musical fountain. This musical fountain is said to be the largest in Asia. And there are free performances daily on regular intervals (see this website for details).

Excess into Daci’en Temple and Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is via a gate at the south end. Admission fees, as strange as it may sound, are applicable for visiting the temple complex and the pagoda within.

Admission fee for temple complex: RMB 50/25 (adult/children)

*There might be additional fees for climbing the pagoda, though we cannot confirm as we did not enter the temple complex due to time constraint.
