Arthur’s Pass : Dramatic mountain pass across the Southern Alps
Day 10 of our South Island campervan trip marked the transition from the rugged West Coast back to the east, with a scenic drive from Hokitika to Christchurch via the renowned Arthur’s Pass.
Arthur’s Pass was chosen as the return route not only for its direct connection to Christchurch, but also for its historical and scenic significance. As the highest and most dramatic of the three main passes across the Southern Alps, Arthur’s Pass offers a unique blend of alpine landscapes, engineering marvels, and natural beauty.
The route was completed in 1923 to link the east and west coasts of the South Island, and it remains one of New Zealand’s most celebrated scenic drives. Today, it draws visitors for its breathtaking mountain views, native beech forests, and the opportunity to witness the transition between two vastly different landscapes.
